the new government previously heavily criticised the RRP, so it is unlikely that they will persue it within the short term.
actually. they just might. dont governments usually follow on the projects of previous governments

Highway 2000 was one of the best things PNP did and the public loved it (except for the tolls). With the PNM the RRP was kinda a grandiose project which (sadly in my view) is unnecessary if a proper highway system is put in place...

In Jamaica, Highway 2000 is necessary
In T&T, RRP is a nice cherry on the top that could wait for now

They launched the beams for the Aranguez overpass last night. Unfortunately I missed it due to traffic when I was trying to get to the site. They assembled the entire superstructure on one of the ramps, placed one of the ends on mobile scaffolding and pushed it across the highway to rest it in place.

Might take some pics to post on here for the foreigners.

Aranjuez bridge takes shape
Monday, June 21 2010

click on pic to zoom inAHEAD OF SCHEDULE: The steel super structure of the Aranjuez Bridge was installed over the Churchill Roosevelt Highway on Saturday night. On hand to o...WORKS Minister Austin Jack Warner on Saturday launched the steel super structure of the Aranjuez Bridge, above the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, just seven months after construction started on the project.

The overpass is a 54 metres single span structure which, when completed, will accommodate four lanes of traffic over the Churchill Roosevelt Highway.

The steel structure is 54 metres in length and weighs about 240 tonnes.

It has been placed on four seismic-designed bearings to its final position using four Cornetto Modular Self Propelled Electronic (MSPE) trailers, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

Warner launched the steel structure at about 9 pm on Saturday.

The ministry said the MSPE crossed the highway in approximately 20 minutes with the massive steel structure, which was fully assembled on the North Embankment, at Aranjuez, during the last two months.

The entire operation took less than four hours, allowing the highway to be reopened more than six hours ahead of schedule, the ministry said.

The ministry also noted that the launch was completed five weeks ahead of schedule. Vinci Construction Grands Projects, the same firm responsible for the Interchange Project at the Valsayn intersection, has told the ministry that they will take whatever action necessary to maintain and improve the delivery date for the Aranjuez bridge project.

It is expected that the project will allow for a free flow of traffic from Port-of-Spain to San Fernando as the traffic lights at Aranjuez and El Socorro will be removed.

Warner said this will only serve to reduce the daily traffic congestion faced by motorists.

The project was started under the former PNM administration.

Second phase of Aranjuez Bridge begins this week

Tuesday, June 22 2010

Work on the Aranjuez Bridge will continue later this week when the second phase of construction is due to begin.

Thibault Mercier, the project manager of Vinci Construction Grand Projects, the French company which is constructing the bridge, said the second phase was the placement of the deck slabs on the steel structure, and road works.

The pre-constructed steel structure was positioned above the Churchill Roosevelt Highway on Saturday last in the Aranjuez area after a launch attended by Works and Transport Minister, Austin Jack Warner.

Warner noted that the phase was completed seven months after construction began on the bridge and five weeks before the scheduled date of completion.

Mercier said yesterday that most of the work on the bridge is expected to be completed in five months time.

The cost of the entire project was estimated at $166 million by former works and transport minister, Colm Imbert.

I think that the Government of Trinidad & Tobago should use YELLOW Centerline System for their Road Surface Marking. With the Yellow centerline roads have more IMPACT and the system is clearer and less confusing than when WHITE is used centerlines and all other road markings.

Yellow lines are used to separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and white lines are used to separate traffic moving in the same direction, and on the shoulders of paved roads. On one-directional roads, a yellow line appears on the left shoulder, and a white line on the right shoulder. Passing rules are denoted by dashed lines as in the United States. Orange painted lines are used when the direction of the road is altered temporarily for construction projects.

The PTSC now has a fleet of 310 buses at its disposal for use on over 100 routes in Trinidad and Tobago. This represents an increase of over 250 percent in the number of working buses in the country over the last 5 years. The next and final phase of fleet expansion will increase the number of available buses to 400, which is expected to adequately satisfy travel demand during peak hours and significantly increase the frequency of existing services.
So now slowly the buses will reach to more numbers and through this it will be easy for one to get the buses at any place around the city and even buses are the only cheapest public transportation.

It looks like Package C of the interchange at the UBH/CRH intersection would be completed. Cabinet gave approval for $493 million.

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/...105006924.html

I for one am really pleased as it would have been a real shame to leave the interchange incomplete.

On a side note, just some updates:

The Aranguez bridge is on schedule to be opened by the end of the year. The south access roads have been completed and are being utilized to eliminate the west bound right turns off of the CRH at Aranguez and El Socorro.

The first phase of the Diego Martin Highway expansion has been completed as well. Subsequent phases to begin soon.

The east bound lanes of the CRH from Omeara to Wallerfield are almost complete. There is only some paving on a section to be done. The traffic would be diverted to these new lanes and the lanes traffic is currently on would be upgraded before the entire highway is opened.

To Victoria Gardens. The first phase involved construction of an additional lane from western main road to victoria gardens. This would make 3 lanes heading into diego. The plan is to construct 2 new lanes heading into diego from victoria gardens to the big tree right next to the 2 that come out of diego. The portion of the diego martin main road in front of starlite up to victoria gardens would be dualled.

So 3 lanes heading in : 1 to go on to the main road in front of startlite, the police stations and so on and 2 to by pass starlite and all the businesses in four roads.

In essence the diego martin highway would start at victoria gardens hence the "expansion".

ARANJUEZ OVERPASS

Aranjuez overpass opens tomorrow
By Rickie Ramdass rickie.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Jan 16, 2011 at 10:46 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jan 16, 2011 at 10:46 PM ECT

BY tomorrow afternoon, motorists heading into the capital city are expected to meet a free flow of traffic along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway after the Grand Bazaar intersection.

This comes with the opening, at 4.30 p.m. tomorrow, of the Aranjuez overpass, which will see the removal of traffic lights at the Aranjuez and El Socorro intersections, said Director of Highways Roger Ganesh yesterday.

Ganesh, in a phone interview, said as a result of the opening, there will be a change of route for motorists heading into Aranjuez, El Socorro (north and south) and surrounding areas along the highway from Port of Spain and vice-versa.

"There are roads linking El Socorro South, El Socorro North, Aranjuez South and North, et cetera, without motorists having to wait for traffic signals to change," he said.

He said a number of traffic signs still needed to be installed in the area in order to direct drivers into the proper lanes to get to their destination, and it was his belief that with the changes, the usual traffic congestion in the area would be greatly improved.

"We still have to install some signs after the opening and this would be done in the shortest possible time to aid drivers," he said.

Asked about claims by former works and transport minister Colm Imbert on Friday that not all access roads leading to the overpass were complete for the opening, Ganesh said: "Well I cannot really comment on what he said, because I did not hear exactly what he said, but as far as I know all of the access roads are complete.

"The only road that still has to be worked on is El Socorro North and the Aranjuez connector road. This is being worked on by Coosals (Construction Company Ltd) and is expected to be complete by March," he said.

The overpass is comprised of a 54-metre single-span structure and will accommodate four lanes of traffic—two lanes going north to south and two lanes going south to north.

The overpass contract, which was awarded to French construction company VINCI Construction at a cost of $166.7 million by the former administration on March 12, 2009, is a continuation of the CRH/Uriah Butler Interchange.

When the Express visited the site yesterday, Junior Sammy, managing director and executive chairman of the Junior Sammy Group of Companies, was inspecting the final finishes of the road-paving works.

His company, along with Coosals, was awarded the contract for the road works. Sammy said he was satisfied with how the construction of the overpass progressed.

"I am here to make a site visit and I am satisfied. It was smooth... All of the access roads are complete so my part is done. As a matter of fact, things went so smoothly that if we did not experience issues with the weather over the past couple of months, which had caused some delay, I am sure we would have completed our work at least two months ago," he said.
