Hmmm, I wonder if (not when) Philippine Airlines will actually join oneworld because it has been invited by the management, and if Cathay Pacific will be the primary sponsor to bring PR into the alliance. If that's the case, two Southeast Asian carriers (the other being Malaysia Airlines) will be members of the second-largest airline alliance in the world...

Since the failure of Kingfisher, getting an Indian carrier is higher on the list of priorities for oneworld. I think BA is now code sharing with Indego but they are a LCC at this moment in time.

Do you sense that Jet Airways will become a oneworld member in the future? And why?

Post Kingfisher, yes, Jet Airways would have been a logical choice. I cannot see it now because Jet are closely aligned to Etihad who, in turn, are closer to Skyteam.

That is true. US Airways will need to drop its Star Alliance membership once the consolidation is complete… and AA will remain with oneworld. When that happens, United will be the sole Star Alliance member from the United States.

Overall, a good few months for oneworld; bmi, TAM and US Airways all left/leaving Star for oneworld.

I then wonder if oneworld will overtake Star Alliance as the largest airline alliance in the world, given the merger of US Airways with American Airlines, as well as the move of TAM as the largest Brazilian carrier.

As well as India, which we talked about earlier in the thread, mainland China is a weak area for oneworld. Gone are the days when HKG was the logical route into mainland China. At the moment Star and Skyteam have it covered.

Allow me to elaborate. In the last few months bmi, TAM and US Airways have either left or announced that they are leaving Star Alliance for oneworld.

Perhaps because KA has not yet covered a lot of cities in Mainland China, something that its rival alliances (Air China and EVA Air with Star Alliance; China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, and Xiamen Air with Skyteam) have already covered very extensively. Perhaps it's time for oneworld to focus more on South and Southeast Asia, if it hasn't done so already... Malaysia Airlines is already with oneworld, and hopefully, Philippine Airlines will join MH with the alliance.

- Star Alliance has Singapore Airlines and Thai
- Skyteam has Vietnam Airlines (and will include Garuda Indonesia from 2014)

...in fact, oneworld reportedly wanted to let PR join the alliance. I suspect that with its current codesharing with CX (also historic ties), it will be an easy admission for Philippine Airlines into the alliance. It'd be an interesting thing, though, that Philippine Airlines will partner with airlines like Iberia or American… even more interesting would be PR's partnership with S7 Airlines or Finnair or even LAN, airlines that have not operated to the Philippines before.

I think Hainan wanted to join oneworld, but it was opposed by CX. Don't think there are that many choices left for a truly national Chinese carrier at all.

Interesting that when it comes to airline alliances, China and Taiwan get on so well.
