Qatar Airways Offers OneWorld Membership to Air India

Qatar Airways has approached Air India to join Oneworld alliance, a rival of the Star Alliance, assuring it of support for the membership. The offer is a sign of the swiftly mounting interest in the Indian civil aviation sector from international airlines.

While Star Alliance is the world’s largest airline alliance with 28 members in its fold which includes Lufthansa, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, Oneworld is a smaller group with 12 active members, including American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Japan Airlines, and Qantas.

Each alliance offers its members access to a network made up of all member carriers. Passengers get the option of using frequent flier miles in buying seats of any member carrier. It also gives the airline joining the alliance, passenger feed to fill its domestic network. Qatar has become the first carrier from the Middle East to join a global alliance and the joining formalities will be complete by October-end.

The proposal by Qatar is likely to be part of the discussion between Air India and Star Alliance management currently on in Frankfurt.

A senior Air India official said that Qatar had approached them to join Oneworld. “Our first preference is to join Star Alliance but we cannot wait forever to join it. In the meeting with Star Alliance, our CMD is likely to raise the Qatar offer and set a September-end deadline for the alliance to respond on inducting us,” said the official.

Star Alliance had put the proposal for Air India’s entry into on hold since July 2011 on the grounds that the airline had not fulfilled the conditions – a charge Air India denied.

According to unconfirmed reports, Star Alliance wanted both Jet Airways and Air India to join together — a proposal that was rejected by the civil aviation ministry.

The national carrier needs to join an alliance to counter the huge network the Jet and Etihad combine is going to offer after the deal between the two is complete.

Noooooooooooooo! Qatar Airways. Don't allow this to happen. They are basically screwed out of Star for a reason. They are in state of complete mess. Air India would just bring the value of One World down. Not after World worked so hard to get a great Middle East Airline. Plus Sri Lankan is not that far away and they are joining Oneworld. It is a matter of time when Eithad and Jet Airways both go to Skyteam and Emirates ends up pressured to join an alliance which will probably be Syteam or Star.

Air India is not so much an airline as it is a flying bus line.

Actually adding Air India would be a HUGE boost for OneWorld. It is the ONLY Indian Airline that can join an alliance (Jet Airways is partnered with Etihad and all other Indian Airlines are low-cost).

After the US, India is the largest market for many carriers including British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates, etc. And ALL of the 3 alliances have been seeking an Indian airline.

Given that India is the fastest growing aviation market in the world and the1 Billion people with an economy growing at 6% annually, OneWorld would be smart to invite Air India.

If Emirates join the Star Alliance, One world is Screwed!

So would be Skyteam with Saudia or possible Eithad. That would be dropping a mother bomb on the alliances. Nothing could top that. What makes Air India so special that they are the only ones from India that can join an alliance? Sure Spice Jet and Indigo are small airlines but there is plenty of room for the all the airlines to grow domestically in India and then get bigger enough to join an Alliance. They are bring something different to the table to offer to the Alliances.

No, SpiceJet and Indigo are low-cost airlines which most alliances would not want to add PLUS they do not fly to any OneWorld hubs!

Air India connects all small and large cities in India and flies to a lot of big OneWorld hubs. Yes Air India is a struggling airline, but given that OneWorld desparately needs bigger markets to grow, having an Indian airline would be very beneficial.

Air India needs to shape up before its inducted into ONEWORLD; else it risks being declined.. just being a part of a growing market does not qualify it to be automatically accepted into any alliance.. All the member airlines in an alliance vote to allow a new entrant... I doubt airlines like BA or CX will be happy to put their flight numbers on a AI flight or even codeshare with AI right now...

Many well known airlines already have codeshares with Air India including Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Swiss Air, Air Canada, and Asiana.

The only reason Star Alliance rejected Air India was because Air India refused to allow Jet Airways to join Star Alliance at the same time.

LOL the "minimum joining condition" WAS to allow Jet Airways to join at the same time, which Air India refused.

Air India had numerous audits done by Star Alliance and was ontrack to join until the very end. Regardless, Star Alliance is now once again considering allowing Air India to join since their numbers are dropping in India: http://www.livemint.com/Companies/tV...for-India.html
