#001 l Taipei 101 l TAIPEI l 509m l 101fl
Taipei 101
Taipei, Taiwan HEIGHT: 509 meters/1,671 feet FLOORS: 101 COMPLETION: 2004 ARCHITECT: C.Y. Lee and Partners Taipei 101 presents a new model for the Asian skyscraper, one explicitly evocative of traditional Chinese architecture. Designed as a segmented shaft of eight outward sloping segments, the tower resembles a giant glass pagoda. The green tinted glass cladding is meant to mimic the color of jade. The segments, consisting of eight floors, lean out slightly, creating the distinctly stacked or tiered silhouette. The tower is dressed in ornamental motifs drawn from traditional Chinese architectural sources. Large scale ornamental elements and "auspicious emblems" cap each segment. Medallions grace the center of the tower, while decorative features protrude from the corners. An elaborate, stylized spire, 508m high, tops the structure. Lee's architecture employs botanical as well as traditional architectural themes. Each eight-storey segment has been likened to a segment of a bamboo stalk, and the whole project evokes, in the words of the architect, a sense of "petal-like" blooming, giving the tower a sense of "upgrading and fullness", which are important concepts in Chinese culture. Despite its historicist references, the tower introduces a number of pioneering technological innovations. A giant pendulum suspended from the 92nd floor acts as a passive mass damper, reducing the building sway at the top of the tower, and counteracting the lateral forces induced by high winds and earthquakes. Other technical innovations include high-speed pressurized elevators that travel at record-breaking speeds. They will reach the observation deck in just 39 seconds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I love it for two reasons the glass and the fact that it beats Petronas. I didn't give it a 10 b/c of the spire though 9/10

A grandiose landmark with Eiffeltower-like visual strength of expression.
This building is truely an asset for the nation as well as for the rest of the world. Spectacular in an unforced way, which gives it value for a seemingly endless period into the future. 9/10 |

A WTB built in an earthquake zone, that's some engineering feat.
Lots of traditional design elements.. that's a plus as I see it, even if it means breaking up the facade in horizontal sections. It's a beautiful tower and an impressive sight! 9.5!

8/10. It's beautiful and obviously original. But too green.

I don't like too this building.
It is too cubic and it's the same architecture on all the sides. I puts 6.5 nevertheless because it is modern and rather high.

7/10, only because of its height....
I hope there will be built another scraper which will hold the crown... I don't like that "traditional" (asian) style |

I agree with Aquamadoor, its in Asia so why not make it Asian style? Does everything have to be western?
I think its a great looking building. Very sleek and stylish. The facade is awesome. The building is also quite amazing during the night. I give it a 10/10. And for il fenomeno, isnt it cool how they were able to take something so simple like a chinese food box and use it for a design of WTB. That's if you look it at that way. |

A great skyscraper, it's really worth the World's Tallest-titel IMO. I really like the color of it!
