4 More Airlines to Join Skyteam

4 more carriers to join Skyteam
By Kim So-young
11 June 2005
The Korea Herald

Skyteam, a seat-sharing network of nine international airlines including Korean Air Co., yesterday announced plans to add four other carriers as alliance associate members.

Air Europa of Spain, Copa Airlines of Panama, Kenya Airways and Tarom of Romania are scheduled to finalize their entry by the second half of 2006, Skyteam said yesterday.

While the new associate members will not participate in the airline network's decision-making process, they will be able to participate in most joint programs such as code-share agreements, mileage and lounge access, which would extend more benefits to passengers, officials said.

"As we approach our fifth anniversary, it is fitting that we prepare to welcome the first four associate airlines," said Leo van Wijk, CEO and president of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, a Skyteam member.

"The Associate Program is a new tool of SkyTeam's growth strategy and will broaden the alliance's presence to several strategic regions while providing more travelers with access to our expanding network," he said following the alliance's semiannual meeting in Amsterdam.

SkyTeam was formed in June 2000 with four initial members - Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, Aeromexico and Air France.

Today, it also partners Alitalia, Continental Airlines, CSA Czech Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Through the worldwide network, SkyTeam offers its 343.6 million annual passengers a system of more than 15,000 daily flights covering 660 destinations in more than 130 countries.

Apart from the four airlines preparing to join Skyteam as associate members, Aeroflot Airlines of Russia and China Southern Airlines are also gearing up to enter the network as formal members.

New SkyTeam livery

On Apr. 1, flight Delta DL74, a B764ER with registration N844MH, from Atlanta to Milano Malpensa was the first commercial flight of a plane sporting the new Sky Team livery. The livery, designed by Brandimage-Desgrippes & Laga was inspired to the alliance logo and is made by a silver fuselage with a dark blue tail with the SkyTeam logo in white. Between the wing and the tail there’s large dark blue “lace” slighlty angled (goes from top to bottom). In the forward part of the fuselage, between the cockpit and the leading edge of the wings, above the row of windows there’s a large “SKYTEAM” text in blue; below the windows there’s the red Delta logo and “DELTA” text in dark blue.
Delta was the first company to wear the new livery but all the SkyTeam fleet will introduce an aircraft with the new livery before the end of 2009. Nine aircraft will get the new livery with the following timeline:

* Delta B767-400 Mar. 2009
* Aeroméxico B767-200 May 2009
* Alitalia B767-300 Apr. 2009
* Czech Airlines ATR42 Apr. 2009
* Air France B777-300 Jun. 2009
* China Southern B777-200ER Jun. 2009
* KLM B777-300 Aug. 2009
* Aeroflot A330-200 Nov. 2009
* Korean Air A330 Oct. 2009

It takes 10 days, on average, to customize the aircraft with the new livery. Each aircraft gets 3 layers of paint: base, color and finish. The B767-400 required 265 lt. of paint (of which, 151.5 silver colour for the fuselage, 75.5 lt. of grey for the wings and 7.85 lt. of dark blue colour paint for the lace and SkyTeam logo). The aircraft made its debut on the day the alliance, at the end of the Steering Commitee, announced a new centralized management organization (based in Amsterdam and responsible for marketing activities, sales, relationships, cargo, advertising, branding finance, corporate communication), a new product, “SkyTeam Italy Pass” (that enables passengers flying to Italy with intercontinental round-trip tickets to have advantageous fares on Alitalia and AirOne domestic routes) and an update about the London Heathrow Terminal 4 project (with the expected dedicated lounge and renewal of the check-in area).

Vietnam Airlines moves to join SkyTeam alliance

Apr 15, 2009

HANOI (AFP) — National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines on Wednesday confirmed its wish to become a member of the SkyTeam Alliance of airlines, expected next year, a press release said.

Under the agreement signed in Hanoi Wednesday, Vietnam Airlines would "undertake exclusive discussions to become a part of SkyTeam during the year 2010, pending fulfilment of the alliance's membership requirements," the statement said.

"Vietnam Airlines will enhance SkyTeam's network in Southeast Asia," said SkyTeam steering committee chairman, Dominique Patry, who called the communist country's airline "a strategic partner".

Vietnam Airlines expects to triple its fleet of 50 aircraft by 2020, and officials say it is seeking to become one of the region's best carriers.

"The agreement we signed today reaffirms Vietnam Airlines' position as a major carrier in Southeast Asia and marks a step forward in our efforts to become a strong global partner of SkyTeam," said Pham Ngoc Minh, the airline's chief executive officer.

The 10-member SkyTeam is a global airline alliance that includes Air France, Korean Air and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. It offers its 462 million annual passengers a worldwide system of more than 16,700 daily flights to 905 destinations in 169 countries.

At a press conference, Duong Tri Thanh, Vietnam Airlines' deputy chairman, said that because of the global economic downturn the number of foreign passengers flying with Vietnam Airlines in the first quarter of this year was 92 percent of the comparable figure for the same period last year.

The number of domestic customers was rising, but at a slower pace, Thanh said.

IATA, the airline industry association, said last month that a sharp global decline in air travel accelerated in February as global passenger volumes plunged 10.1 percent below levels recorded a year earlier.

According to the schedule, AeroMexico is due to have one of it's B767 painted with the special SkyTeam livery. Unfortunately I have not heard anything as of yet, so my question is does anyone have any idea when AM is next?

Just for your viewing pleasure...

Since Continental is still in SkyTeam, would they paint one of their Boeing 767's in ST colours? Then maybe paint it in *Alliance?

LONDON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Today SkyTeam announced that the first level of its first ever co-branded alliance lounge in Terminal 4 at London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) opens on Thursday, June 4. The two-level lounge occupies more than 1,600 square meters and offers space for more than 300 passengers. Jointly designed by the nine member and associate airlines serving Heathrow, the lounge offers customers a superior airport experience that combines the comfort and convenience passengers have come to expect with luxurious amenities such as a wine bar, oxygen bar and full-body massage chairs.

Delta, Air France-KLM launch first joint club at Heathrow

SkyTeam partners Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM have unveiled their first co-branded club facility at London Heathrow Airport. With features including a spa, restaurant and wine bar, the bi-level lounge in Terminal 4 is designed to attract more premium customers to SkyTeam airlines. Delta says the joint club is another example of the synergies created by its antitrust immunity, which was granted last year. "This lounge is just another way for us to offer a seamless traveling experience to passengers," says Vinay Dube, Delta's managing director of alliances.
