Continental Air CEO Says Business Traffic Is Stabilizing

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--The falloff in business travel, the most profitable part of the airline business, is stabilizing, Larry Kellner, chairman and chief executive of Continental Airlines, Inc. (CAL) said Thursday.

A recovery in business travel could happen quickly as the world economy gets stronger, he added, although there's no sign of a rebound yet.

International travel has been hit by fears related to the spread of the H1N1 virus, Kellner said, although the market in Asia is showing recovery. The Houston airline said earlier that it lost $30 million of revenue in May, mainly on canceled flights to Mexico, as passengers stopped flying due to fears of the illness.

"We've got to be flexible as we navigate the market," Kellner said. That includes adding passenger fees to match competitors and cutting route capacity to keep pace with passenger traffic.

"We have had a very tough spring in the New York area," Keller said, calling on government regulators to assist with flight congestion there. "We need to work on short-term fixes for the New York air space. We need a long-term focus on fixing the air traffic control system."

A modern ATC system could also save 10% on carbon emissions and fuel use, the executive said at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Transportation Conference in New York, which was Web cast.

For the long term, Continental will continue to invest in its fleet of aircraft, including Boeing's new 787, Kellner said. "Our new fleet is a hedge against fuel," he said, adding that it paid off quickly to add winglets to older aircraft.

Kellner said Continental is on track to drop out of the Skyteam global airline alliance on Oct. 24 and "in minutes or days" after join the competing Star Alliance, where it plans to form closer ties with United Airlines.

Alitalia aircraft with new SkyTeam livery enters service

Italian carrier Alitalia has announced that a Boeing 767 aircraft with the new Alitalia SkyTeam livery has entered service and is being operated on flights to North America.

Four of SkyTeam's ten member airlines, Aeromexico, Alitalia, Czech Airlines and Delta Air Lines (NYSEAL), have now customised an aircraft with the new SkyTeam livery, which was designed by Brandimage-Desgrippes & Laga. By the end of 2009 there will be nine aircraft with the SkyTeam livery.

Alitalia's Boeing 767 with the SkyTeam livery is one of the airline's fleet of 18 long-range aircraft, which is made up of ten Boeing 777s, six Boeing 767s and two Airbus A330s.

Really nice liveries, thank you for the pictures.

Personally I've seen at Barcelona the Delta ST livery, I'll try to upload it.
The alliance airlines will move to the recently finished T1 terminal at El Prat towards the end of this year.

SkyTeam lounge passengers able to use VoIP solutions at Heathrow

Passengers are now able to use VoIP solutions and a range of additional internet applications through a Wi-Fi network in Heathrow's SkyTeam lounge.

The development, provided by BT for the lounge in Terminal Four, means that passengers waiting there for flights will now be able to work online and utilise any VoIP hardware they may have, something that could appeal to a large number of air travellers.

Wi-Fi services will be offered free of charge to reflect the growing importance of broadband connectivity in everyday business life.

Francesca Freeland, lead for SkyTeam Heathrow Airport team said: "The premium lounge was designed to offer customers a superior experience that meets their individual needs and with complimentary Wi-Fi internet access passengers can stay connected while awaiting departure."

SkyTeam intends to create a lounge environment where businesspeople can utilise all the resources they need to catch up on office work in the most convenient way possible.

BT recently announced a £1.5 billion investment to develop next-generation broadband networks throughout the UK.

Amsterdam To Be New SkyTeam Headquarters

Darren Shannon [email protected]

SkyTeam has picked Amsterdam as the base for a new global headquarters, and has bolstered its recently announced centralized management team with six new executives.

This core management team will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the alliance, including marketing, sales, airport synergies and transfer product, cargo, advertising, finance, corporate communications and alliance administration.

"SkyTeam has operated as a virtual entity since its inception. However, as the industry becomes increasingly complex and the alliance continues to pursue global growth, the transition to a central management structure remains a top priority," said Marie-Joseph Male, who in April was named managing of the new management team.

"We have already made significant progress, and the alliance is working diligently to ensure the office is up and running no later than fourth quarter of 2009."

That office will be based at Schiphol Airport, home to SkyTeam member KLM. "Amsterdam is centrally located in a time zone strategic to SkyTeam's partners across the globe, and with a major SkyTeam hub at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the offices are easily accessible."

In addition to Male, SkyTeam's management will include executives from six member carriers. These include Min Zeng of China Southern Airlines, who has been named deputy managing director in charge of membership development; Alitalia's Mauro Oretti as VP for sales and marketing; and Gordon Humpherys, who leaves his role as director of North Atlantic operations at Delta Air Lines' Northwest Airlines subsidiary to become the alliance's VP, airport services.

Korean Air's SkyTeam manager also joins the management team as VP, alliance operations, while Air France's Jean-Guy Lengline has been named VP, support and services. KLM's Fatima da Gloria de Souza will head SkyTeam's corporate communications and brand department as a director.

SkyTeam expects to appoint as many as 20 employees.

"We were committed to identifying the right talent for each executive position and are proud to have created a uniquely international and multi-cultural team," said Male. "This shows SkyTeam's commitment to integrating the expertise of its partner airlines in the pursuit of the alliance's business objectives."

He continued, "The transition to a centralized management structure will further support worldwide growth of the alliance today and for the future. We are excited to help drive forward SkyTeam's initiatives and to continue to achieve success through the collaboration of all 10 alliance members."
