Exactly what I thought! Garuda is one of the few major airlines in south-east Asia that hasn't joined an alliance yet. Currently they're making good profit after several years of restructuring. They are going to expand their fleet by more than 100%, and their current fleet will be overhauled to become one of asia's world class airlines. Now that their EU ban has been lifted (which wasn't about just Garuda but about indonesian aviation safety in general) they will be operating to Amsterdam (skyteam hub!) in the near future, as well as to other european cities. The domestic market that Garuda operates is BIG, and they have good connections to Australia, which is what skyteam has been lacking so far.

Skyteam must be quick, as Garuda's current growth will also be noticed by the other two.

No they will join early next year, my guess is before SkyTeam's 10th anniversary! Can't wait untill they join! and to see VN777 to be painted in SkyTeam colors!

Well Garuda will have to fight for a spot, with VN joining SkyTeam as a SE Asia member (as they are considered a darling to AF), there will likely be 1 more spot, MH has been hunting for that spot for years now! Hopefully when VN joins it might prompt Garuda's chances as they both code-share on routes to from Vietnam.

Garuda has been approaching KE since last year. Hopefully KE will promote GA to become the 2nd South-east Asian airliners to join Skyteam.

I thought KE approached GA.

I do hope that any SkyTeam airline (ehem...paging KLM) will support Philippine Airlines too! GA, PR and VN in SkyTeam would actually work quite well and can effectively compete against SQ and TG in Star. This means however that MH would have to be in Oneworld.
