SkyTeam Unveils New Alliance Facility at London Heathrow Airport

London and Barcelona Latest Additions to Alliance's Co-location Network

LONDON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Today SkyTeam, the global airline alliance,
unveiled its spacious, customer-focused facility at Terminal 4 at London
Heathrow airport. The new facility includes an exclusive premium check-in area
for first and business class passengers, premium economy passengers, as well
as SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus passengers. Also unveiled today was the second
level of the SkyTeam co-branded lounge. When the check-in area and second
level of the lounge open to passengers on November 5 and November 9,
respectively, the combined amenities will offer an enhanced experience for
customers traveling through London Heathrow. SkyTeam is the first airline
alliance to unveil a permanent, common facility in one terminal at London
Heathrow.

"This is the first time member airlines have worked together from start to
finish to create a consolidated facility truly centered around the alliance
and our passengers," said Marie-Joseph Male, managing director, SkyTeam.
"Shared spaces like Heathrow demonstrate how, through collaboration, alliances
can deliver added value to customers while realizing efficiencies for
members."

Landside Space Designed for Flow

The common alliance facility at Terminal 4 was designed to invoke movement
through a modern look inspired by the SkyTeam brand. For the first time, all
SkyTeam co-located members will share airport services, including check-in
desks, self-service kiosks, and bag drop off locations.

The premium check-in area, the first to be SkyTeam branded, will offer first
and business class passengers as well as SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus
passengers 14 check-in desks and 10 common-use, self-service kiosks. By early
2010, passengers will be able to access travel reservations with any of the
eight SkyTeam carriers serving London Heathrow at kiosks in the premium zone
and throughout the terminal.

Airside Lounge a First For Alliance

Once airside, first and business class passengers and SkyTeam Elite Plus
passengers will enjoy access to the SkyTeam branded lounge, designed by
Brandimage - Desgrippes & Laga. Services on the second level of the lounge
will include: a quiet room with day beds; two VIP rooms; and a separate
children's area with games and television. The first floor, which opened in
June, offers a variety of amenities including wine bar, oxygen bar and
full-body massage chairs.

An enhanced presence at London Heathrow will augment SkyTeam's already
superior global hub network. At London Heathrow, passengers can take
advantage of several nonstop service options to SkyTeam's hubs, such as
Amsterdam, Atlanta, Milan, Moscow, Nairobi, New York, Paris, Prague, Rome and
Seoul. During the upcoming winter season, SkyTeam will operate 42 daily
flights from Heathrow to several alliance hubs and key international
destinations.

Currently, Delta, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Kenya Airways are operating out
of Terminal 4. The remaining SkyTeam carriers at Heathrow (Aeroflot, Air
France, Alitalia, Czech Airlines and Korean Air) move to Terminal 4 in
November.

SkyTeam Moves to Terminal 1 at Barcelona

Also this week, SkyTeam opened a shared facility at the new, state-of-the-art
Terminal 1 at Barcelona Airport. The eight SkyTeam airlines serving Barcelona
(Aeromexico, Aeroflot, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, Czech Airlines, Delta
Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines) began operating out of the new
terminal on October 25. This move provides member airlines quicker access to
the runway and decreases taxiing time by approximately ten minutes. With
shorter taxi times, carriers require less fuel, which not only saves on costs
but also contributes to a friendlier environment.

Shared airport facilities, similar to those at London Heathrow and Barcelona,
are an essential part of SkyTeam's overall strategy. SkyTeam continues to
evaluate similar investments other airports around the globe.

MH are not that level so any alliance would prefer them, its not because they are not interested, sounds like they are too luxury to join one of the alliances, and dont compare the level with EK, MH is good in service, hospitable airliner, but planes are real shit, i dont understand how they have 5 star rating in one row with Cathay and Qatar, and Emirates not in the list, i think malaysian government did a lot for that fact, MAS is promoted so wide but unfortunately the reality is not the same as their advirtesement, planes are old and dated, and even no entertainment in 330, livery is also too old fashioned, cabin crew dress for men is unfashionable and ugly, i think there are a lot of things to do, they need a huge rebrending and planes renovation, although its a pleasure to fly with MAS on a short routes from KL, but AirAsia staff is not worse, i think the same level with MH, same hospitality.

emm..pretty true about male cabin stuff and that old plane...

and MAS is in restructuring process which needs time to purchase new aircraft. btw, MAS is waiting for her first A380 and will announce purchase of either B787 or A350 sooner this year....

Skyteam bundles its forces in Asia

By Luc Citrinot, eTN senior managing editor, Asia | Nov 27, 2009
Despite the presence of Korean Air and China Southern, alliance Skyteam continues to lack visibility in Asia, a comment which does not seem to please Pierre Gourgeon, president and CEO of Air France-KLM, the driving force behind the alliance.

“This is not true! We have a very strong presence in Korea, Japan, and China, especially with our partners Korean Air and China Southern Airlines,” he said during a recent press conference in Paris. However, he is prompt to recognize that Skyteam remains weak in markets such as south Asia (India) and southeast Asia.

Year 2010 should bring welcome changes. Gourgeon confirms that Vietnam Airlines will enter the alliance by next year helping Skyteam to cover extensively southeast Asia from both Vietnam hubs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Vietnam Airlines is now engaged into a modernization process prior to becoming an official member in June 2010. Since 2007, the airline has ordered 36 Airbus A-321, two Airbus A-350 900XWB, 16 Boeing B787 Dreamliners, and 11 ATR 72. Mid-November, the airline announced its intention to acquire four Airbus A380 with the contract being possibly finalized during the first quarter of 2010. Vietnam Airlines has currently a fleet of 52 planes flying 19 domestic and 25 international routes with a total passengers’ number of over nine million. It expects to triple its fleet and passengers number by 2020.

The airlines' network has been reorganized to shorten transit time and improve transfers at HCM City airport, and it has recently increased the number of its weekly flights to Paris CDG, Air France-KLM's main hub in Europe. Vietnam Airlines now flies eight times per week, up by two frequencies. Europe represents a turnover of €165 million in 2008 with three flights to Russia, Germany, and France. “We are currently working all together to bring Vietnam Airlines IT system to Skyteam’s standards”, said Gourgeon.

A new partner to be officially confirmed soon is Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda. “We are very pleased to support the candidacy of Garuda, a long-standing partner of us in Asia,” explained Peter Hartman, president and CEO of KLM. “In our last meeting, we decided to support Garuda’s process into Skyteam in conjunction with Korean Air and Delta Air Lines. I believe, however, that the process would take a year until Garuda’s official entry,” he explained. Year 2011 is also seen as the possible entry date by Garuda management as recently confirmed in exclusivity to eTurboNews by Emirsyah Satar, president and CEO of Garuda. “The soonest, the better. We now work on upgrading our reservation’s system and look to expand our fleet from 66 to 116 aircraft by 2014”, said Satar.

Air France is also looking closely at Japan Airlines. Hearing about the airline’s financial difficulties, Air France-KLM has joined Delta Air Lines and Skyteam to bid for a US$1.02 billion financial pakage to save the airline. The proposal by Delta and SkyTeam includes, among others, a US$500 million equity injection from SkyTeam and a US$300 million revenue guarantee from Delta. The Japanese carrier has just received the government’s approval for a loan of about yen 100 billion from the Development Bank of Japan bridge loans to keep itself operational after being granted authorization by the government. Gourgeon remains cautious about the outcome. “I can’t say more about it. It all depends [on] discussions’ results between the Japanese government and JAL management. We still do not know if the Japanese government will allow the entry of a foreign carrier into JAL ownership,” he said.

In India, Air France seems to have temporarily abandoned the idea to link up with an Indian carrier. “The air travel market is currently very difficult with few good opportunities to find a partner,” said Gourgeon cautiously.

Delta leads in bidding war for stake in JAL: report

(AFP) – 4 days ago

TOKYO — Delta Air Lines has taken the lead in a bidding war with rival American Airlines to take a minority stake in struggling Japan Airlines (JAL), a newspaper reported on Friday.

JAL looks likely to accept capital from Delta, the world's largest carrier, and cross over to the SkyTeam airline alliance, the Asahi Shimbun reported in its evening edition, without citing any sources.

Asia's largest carrier, which currently belongs to the American Airlines-led Oneworld alliance, "is leaning toward" the view that it would be more beneficial to join a bigger alliance, the report said.

Responding to the report, JAL spokeswoman Szehunn Yap said the carrier "has not made a decision on its alliance strategy".

Delta, which last month offered JAL a one-billion-dollar financial package, is now trying to finalise a deal, possibly early next year, the Asahi said.

But American Airlines and its investment partners could still be in the running, particularly if they offer a more attractive financial package, the daily said.

It is also uncertain if a JAL-Delta alliance would gain acceptance from Japanese and US anti-trust authorities, the newspaper added.

Earlier this week American Airlines chief executive Gerard Arpey said the carrier might boost its offer of a 1.1-billion-dollar financial lifeline for the cash-strapped Japanese carrier.

JAL, which last month reported its fourth straight quarterly loss, has been hovering on the brink of bankruptcy in a crisis blamed on the global aviation industry downturn, mismanagement and its huge pension obligations.

The recipient of three government bailouts since 2001, the airline has said it plans thousands of job cuts and a drastic reduction in routes.

It is also seeking more public funds as it restructures under the supervision of a government-backed turnaround body.

Too bad I can't earn Skymiles yet with VN, and it would be difficult to do so given that VN doesn't even fly here. Same with GA.

I still wish Philippine Airlines can join SkyTeam. But I digress.

After Avianca's acquisition of TACA, it's been reportedly moving now in the direction of joining Star Alliance, not SkyTeam. It's a big blow since it leaves SkyTeam without a strong partner in South America, as Avianca is the last South American carrier with a wide network in the continent (the others are LAN, TAM and Copa Airlines, which are in Oneworld and Star respectively).
