30 of these beauties will ride in Belgrade. Rumors say the city will order 50 more.

The first new tram arrives in Belgrade on May 3rd

The representatives of the Spanish team say that behind them stands one of the most challenging and the most interesting projects in the past several years. The experts from Serbia confirm – the new trams are meeting the latest European standards. Trams like this one are riding in cities of Lisbon, Valencia, Edinburg and Houston. The system that is running the trams all over the world for years now will be an enormous technological leap for Belgrade.

-For us as a company, this is a fantastic opportunity to enter a country like Serbia. I hope this is the first of many orders we’ll be having from you. Of course, we must see this tram on tracks first. This was a great challenge because it involves a market that is unknown to us. - Says Luis Lardies, the project manager in CAF.

-These were an intense 18 months. A lot of work. Looking at the past years, this project is one of those we managed to complete in record speed. The city of Belgrade and the public transport company GSP have gave us a real challenge, considering the fact that we sign the contract in November (2009), and that the first tram must arrive in May. Luckily we succeeded. For all of us who worked on this project, to see a finished tram in person, was a great trill. – Adds Jorge Piqueras the technical project manager in CAF.

-The key issue was adjusting the vehicle for Belgrade streets which have complicated routes. This tram has plenty of seats and standing spaces even though it’s narrower than the standard ones. It differs from those we usually make because it only has a drivers cab at one end. The infrastructure in Belgrade does not require a drivers cab on both ends. We also made changes on the power supply system and made it compatible with the system for switching from one track to another (automated track switches). The tram has doors only on one side which allowed us to install floor heating on the other. – Says Jorge Piqueras.

The first is completed, 29 more are made working in 3 shifts.

Parallel with investments into improvement of Belgrade's main modes of publc transport, the City is pushing forward with its new & improved commuter rail service...after last year's trial launch of the first "BG:Voz" line , a further four stations have been added to the service as of April 15th - they are Tosin Bunar, Zemun, Zemun Polje & Batajnica:

During morning & evening rush hour's, trains will continue t run at 15 minute intervals. The journey between Batajnica and downtown Belgrade lasts just over 30 minutes, cutting the usual trip by bus practically in half or more.

Few photos ...

The first new tram has arrived in Belgrade

First out of thirty trams from the Spanish manufacturer CAF has arrived in Belgrade. In the following days, after it’s unloaded, the tram will be assembled because it was delivered in two separated sections.

Workers from CAF are already in Belgrade and they will perform the task of assembling the tram, and that will take them two to three days. After that, the tests at the tram depot will follow. Later on, the tram will be tried out on the tracks, first in New Belgrade and then on the steep and curvy tracks around the Kalemegdan fortress. According to the experts from CAF, the preliminary tests are going to last about three months and then the tram will be tried out in the regular traffic.

Each and one of the thirty new trams that will arrive until the end of the next year is going to have the red and blue exterior and will be completely different from the rail vehicles that are currently running in the city. The trams are low-floored and air-conditioned. The body is made out of aluminum and the interior out of special environmentally safe and inflammable materials.

The new vehicles have six surveillance cameras. The driver is equipped with a touch screen display that will inform him about various parameters including the state of the brakes and the amount of sand at his disposal. Instead of rear-view mirrors, the driver will observe two monitors which will transfer an image from the two exterior cameras. The trams are completely accessible for the people with disabilities. The driver can lower the access ramps by push of the button.

The vehicles have asynchronous propulsion and regenerative breaking. Their length is: 32 m, width: 2.3 m, height (including the pantograph): 3.6 m. Their capacity is 242 passengers and the running speed 60 km/h.
