Could he be the founder of the town? I'm not sure.

He was apparently a leader of Sidama Liberation Movement.

Quote:
The former leader of the Sidama Liberation Movement (SLM), Mr. Woldeamanuel Dubale Hankarso passed away on November 20, 2007 in a London Hospital. He was the leader of the movement since the late 1970s until recently. He lived in exile in Somalia between the late 1970s and 1991 when he came back to Ethiopia to participate in the formation of the transitional government led by EPRDF.

When EPRDF purged out SLM from the transitional government in 1992 Mr. Hankarso sought asylum in Britain and lived there until recently. However, he returned back to Ethiopia a year ago under unclear arrangement with the current government. He went back to Britain because of ill health and passed away there a week ago. His body was sent to Sidama for burial.

They (EPRDF) didn't force him - it was his choice to leave the country. Same thing was happening in the early 90's with OLF. Lencho Leta of OLF, for example, was nominated by Meles Zenawi to lead the transitional government but Lencho refused to be nominated saying that he's got no experience to lead - what Fk was he doing in the parliament anyway....

"When EPRDF purged out SLM from the transitional government in 1992...". key word is 'purge'. I don't believe anyone left the country voluntarily back then.

When I see more of clean streets of hawassa city, I am just falling in love with the city. I hope the city will grow with keeping its cleanness.

interesting place, definitely the most livable and clean Ethiopian city. Addis ababa, take notes.
