I didn't really know where to put that but this Vueling's A320 from Malaga to Amsterdam lost it's radio contact when it was flying over the France and had a nice date with a Mirage 2000...

Nice shots.

BTW, I hate the "new" United livery. It looks like garbage. They should have kept the "old" United livery when they merged with Continental.

How has this airport for 6 runways and Heathrow which is busier only has 2!!! One of them is either over or under designed! I know Heathrow does really need a 3rd, but not sure about a 4th, 5th and 6th?

I know that in Africa KLM A330-200s fly to Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Sudan. I think that in west Africa it s a mix of MD11/B777/A330-200s. But flights will be soon operated with A330-300s to Ghana and Nigeria.

The high number of runways in Amsterdam is because of it's location close to sea, which causes a wide variety in wind directions. Schiphol's runway lay-out makes it possible to use just the runways that are the most suitable for the weather conditions. Another reason is that noise regulations constrain the use of certain runways and flight paths.

In normal circumstances, Schiphol uses 3 of the 5 major runways simultaneously. During inbound-peaks two for landing and one for starts, and the other way around during the outbound peak. The 6th runway (Oostbaan or East-runway) is shorter than the others and is used for small planes (General Aviation) only.

Longterm development plans propose the construction of even more runways: there's a spatial reservation for a new runway parallel to the Kaagbaan (on the southeast side), but a new east-west runway (Haarlembaan or Victorbaan) crossing the existing Polderbaan isn't ruled out either. Main reason for new runways is a better distribution of noise over less-populated areas: the construction of one of these runways might mean that one of the existing runways will be closed.

Current runway lay-out:

Some pictures from the observation deck from last week and today. With some regulars and some less frequent guests.

1. Zooooom, Virgin Atlantic B744 for maintenance.

2. KLM B77W

3. Great Wall Airlines B744

Today

4. BH Airlines A319

5. Another zoooom, Air Transport International B767.

6. The last zoooom, Air Europa B737

7. PGA Portugalia Airlines

8. China Airlines B747

9. Air Transat A332

And I was stung in my face by a wasp on the deck, luckily I'm not allergic.

Video of plane taking off, video taken from car on highway near Schiphol, this plane comes very close.

From the panorama deck on Schiphol I filmed this 25 minute video:

Air traffic above Schiphol intl. airport, sped up 100 times on www.casperflights.com. On this site you can find Amsterdam, London, Paris, Warsaw, Rome and lots more. All live air traffic
