I don't really see the problem, but it's probably cause I generally only take very long flights. Taxiing 10 minutes doesn't really add all that much to your 11 hour flight. I guess it's more of an issue of you had a 60 minute trip from London or something

Too bad that the numbers that you gave are outdated. There actually was approximately 10 min. taxiing time, back when they were still able to cross runways. But due to a near collision, quite a few years ago, crossing runways is now prohibited. Planes have to taxi around the runways, giving you a total amount of taxiing up to 20 minutes, sometimes it can even take you longer taxiing times.

Before runway crossing was prohibited, this runway was indeed open for all planes. But after the prohibition, they are trying to use it only for wide-body aircrafts indeed.

@Go Ahead Eagles

Those pictures have a great composition, but the colours and those extreme hdr effects are so unnatural it's hurting my eyes. I'm not sure why you would do that.

It's an IL-62 from the Ukrainian Government, these kind of diplomatic flights don't fall under EU safety or the local noise regulations.

Schiphol constructs, converts, connects

Schiphol has set up a new masterplan which comprises the followig two key objectives:

1) Growth
Schiphol is preparing itself to accommodate 75 million passengers annualy.
The plan comprises the building of a new pier (A-pier) situated to the south from the terminal building.
Although the initial plan was a phased construction of the pier the latest news is that the whole pier will be build at once. This will have consequences for the cargo activities that are now situated at this site. It is logical that these activities soon will be moved to the other side of the Kaagbaan.

Rumours also speak about extending the excisting terminal to the south, but no final word on that.

2) The travellers comfort
In order to improve the perception that passengers have of Schiphol, their flow trought the airport will be made more efficient. This will be done via implementing central security. Many destinations nowadays have a de-centralized security, which means that the passenger will go through security at the gate. With implementing a centralized security the passenger has more freedom of movement throught the airport. This especially improves the flow for transit passengers.

Works at the E, F and G pier have started to accommodate the centralized security. This means that new gate-houses are being build, gates will get refurbished and that a second floor will be build on the piers in order to separate incoming passengers from departing passengers.

Within the terminal complex works have started to change the security checkpoints at the entrances of lounges one, two and three. The most extensive works are expected in lounge 2 as it will undergo a complete refurbishment.

Above mentioned is not the only contruction work inprogress. Schiphol will also welcome a new Hilton hotel. Its construction has started in 2013 and is progressing. Once work is expeted to be finised in 2015 it will be an eye-catcher when entering the airport by car.

So lots to look forward too.
