Air Arabia considers Moroccan expansion

Air Arabia is considering adding more aircraft to the fleet of its Air Arabia Maroc joint venture.

Dubai: Air Arabia is mulling expansion plans of its Moroccan operations to increase the number of points in Europe it serves from Casablanca, said Group Chief Executive Adel Ali on Monday. Air Arabia Maroc, a joint-venture subsidiary, flies to more than 20 destinations predominantly in Europe.
This past summer Air Arabia, headquartered in Sharjah, increased the number of aircraft in its Moroccan fleet from three to five, Ali told reporters on the sidelines of the Aviation Festival in Dubai.

“We added more for summer and now we are planning to see what more they need. Our vision is to make that hub bigger,” he said.

Air Arabia left one aircraft with the Moroccan subsidiary after summer, increasing Air Arabia Maroc’s fleet to four Airbus A320s.

Ali, who said Air Arabia was developing a plan to increase the size of its Moroccan hub, also said the Group is “optimistic” about Egypt, which has been shrouded in political instability since 2010 until the Presidential election of Abdul Fattah Al Sissi earlier this year.

Now this is an interesting development...

Morocco Says A380 Could Replace B747 on Hajj Trips

Despite the fact that Royal Air Maroc has not yet ordered the Superjumbo, it has shown interest to look away from the Queen of the Skies and use the massive A380 to haul in pilgrims to and from Mecca during the annual Hajj.

Quote:
Morocco’s national carrier said the Airbus Group NV (AIR) superjumbo is in the running to replace its sole Boeing Co. (BA) 747, opening up the possibility of the A380’s first order based around flights for the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage.

Royal Air Maroc will issue an invitation to tender for the deal in the next three months, with the A380 likely to compete with the latest 747-8 version of the original Boeing jumbo, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Habiba Laklalech said today.

The aircraft eventually chosen will fulfill multiple roles, acting on occasion as a transport for the Moroccan Royal Family when not engaged in regular flights or shuttling visitors to Mecca, Laklalech said in an interview in Dubai.

Gibraltar Tanger, after Gibraltar Marrakech in ATR 72-600

Royal Air Maroc Resumes Gibraltar Service in S15 with Tangier Link

Posted: 16 Nov 2014 10:00 PM PST

Update at 0600GMT 17NOV14

Royal Air Maroc in Summer 2015 season will once again provide service to Gibraltar, however this time it’ll be operating Tangier – Gibraltar route. This service is offered twice a week with ATR72 aircraft.

AT990 TNG1105 – 1255GIB AT7 4
AT990 TNG1445 – 1635GIB AT7 7

AT991 GIB1345 – 1325TNG AT7 4
AT991 GIB1725 – 1705TNG AT7 7

RAM in Summer 2014 season offered Marrakech – Gibraltar twice weekly service.

Now we understand that is Casablanca - Tangier - Gibraltar and not only Tangier-Gibraltar. That is more comprehensive.

Half-empty aircraft on Marrakesh flights

by PANORAMA reporter
PANORAMA EXCLUSIVE:

Aircraft on the Marrakesh fights are flying at less than half-empty. Arrivals from Marrakesh for the month of April recorded only 97 seats used, that is, only 97 passengers carried.

The following month 120 seats were used out of 210 seats on offer.

This was a slight improvement which operators 'Your Flight' must be hoping will continue, as it must be difficult to operate profitably on such
numbers of passengers.

In fact, when it comes to departures to Marrakesh, only 92 seats were used in April out of a total of 210 seats on offer; and the following month the situation was almost the same, with just 93 passengers.

A small 70-seater aircraft is being used. It is not known at what percentage occupancy the operation is profitable.

It is known that payment is required in advance to charter the aircraft, which flies weekly on Sundays and also on alternate Thursdays.

The cost of tickets one-way tourist class is £99, and £198 for first class.

Return fares are from £199 tourist class, and £398 first class.

When announced earlier this year that Gibraltar to Marrakech flights were to be introduced, Paul Lopez, described as 'Director of Your Flight' said: “We are confident that these new flights to Marrakech will be a success and an added boost for Gibraltar’s tourism product, trade and

businesses.”Your Flight added that it had spent over a year researching the market with a view to establishing flights to Morocco. "The company believes the service will enhance and increase Gibraltar’s historic ties and business opportunities with Morocco," they said.

They said they had "selected the most expensive option regarding airline operator, which is Royal Air Maroc. It said the decision was based on the airline’s strength as Morocco’s national flag carrier."

Not content with just Marrakech, Your Flight said it was confident this would result in more opportunities to expand in the near future incorporating new destinations in Morocco such as Casablanca, Rabat and Agadir. Flights to Tangier are set to be introduced at the end of 2014/early 2015.

The Marrakech flight had some problem or other and some passengers ended up stranded recently, and had to be brought back through other means. They did not make available a statement to us of what exactly had gone wrong.

Although official assistance to airlines tends to be shrouded in secrecy, it is known that the Tourist Board have provided them with help at taxpayers expense, but they have been reluctant to say just what. However, if one goes by past experience, airlines, their agents or whatever are helped out with marketing and with landing fees, for example.

We recently reported that many people would recall another Moroccan air programme which, when the help ran out, the flights ended.

FAILURE DESPITE SUBSIDY

*Four years ago it was reported that there used to be flights to Tangier and later to Marrakesh and Casablanca. The then Government also heavily subsidised Regional Airlines when they resumed the flights to Casablanca and this proved to be a complete fiasco both in terms of passenger numbers and in terms of the level of subsidy per passenger.

It will be recalled that flights to Madrid, which were initiated with much trumpet-blowing, did not take long to come to an end - and promises of flights to a myriad of other Spanish destinations did not materialise. At first, it was said that the aircraft were too large to fill, but when smaller aircraft were used the problem persisted.

Moroccan Star

In the coming months, we’ll deliver Royal Air Maroc’s first two 787s — making them the first Dreamliner operator in North Africa and the Mediterranean region.
This week, the Moroccan flag carrier’s first 787 rolled out of our paint hangar in Everett in the airline’s stunning white livery.

Royal Air Maroc plans to use the 787 on existing destinations from its base in Casablanca to North America and Europe, as well as opening up new routes. Enjoy these images from our photographer Tim Stake.

47 planes to 100 in 2025

- 13 long haul planes (at least 5 787 + 1 747/A380)
- 13/15 E190
- others are 737-800 and 737 MAX/A320 NEO

In march it will be 52 places with the 2 787 and the 4 E190

Quote:
Morocco Says Airbus A380 Could Replace Boeing 747 on Hajj Trips

Morocco’s national carrier said the Airbus Group NV (AIR) superjumbo is in the running to replace its sole Boeing Co. 747, opening up the possibility of the A380’s first order based around flights for the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage.

Airbus is stepping up efforts to pitch the A380 for Hajj operations as it seeks to establish a new niche for a jet that hasn’t won a new airline buyer since 2012. While a Moroccan order would provide only a minor boost to the backlog, it could help establish the double-decker’s credentials as a viable year-round proposition beyond the week-long pilgrimage itself.

Royal Air Maroc, which competes with Air France-KLM Group (AF) on routes linking Europe with Africa, will also issue proposals for single-aisle planes in 2015, with the re-engined Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320neo likely to lead the way, Laklalech said.

The aircraft would be used on flights to Europe and on RAM’s burgeoning route network from West Africa to its hub in Casablanca, which has seen it become one of the few airlines from outside the region to carry on serving states hit by Ebola.

100-Seaters

All told, RAM aims to expand its fleet from 47 planes to 105 by 2025, among them 13 wide-bodies including the 747 replacement and five Boeing 787s already ordered.

The narrow-body fleet will number about 85 planes, Laklalech said, with some scope for smaller 100-seat models to aid route development, she said, without indicating whether that could involve regional jets such as the Bombardier Inc. (BBD/B) CSeries or Embraer SA (ERJ:US) E-Jet family.

RAM’s first two 787 Dreamliners are due to arrive in December and March, the executive said. Deployment plans for the all-composite jet are focused mainly on trans-Atlantic routes.

The carrier will post a profit this year, Laklalech said, even as it comes under pressure from a so-called open skies agreement that permits 44 European airlines to fly to Morocco.

Flights to the Nigerian capital Abuja will commence next month and a 30-minute service between Tangier and Gibraltar starts in March, with studies underway on further options.

“We would like to strengthen our main routes,” Laklalech said. “We will add more connection possibilities between West Africa and Europe and strengthen our presence in America.”
http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...-on-hajj-trips

--------------------

Quote:
Laklalech further said that Royal Air Maroc is in bilateral codeshare talks with Qatar Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia).
PROSPECTIVE TIE-UPS

Quote:
The North African carrier, which is currently deciding whether it should join one of the major global alliances, has an existing codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways.
“We’re speaking to all of them,” Laklalech said before singling out Saudia and Qatar Airways when asked about prospective tie-ups in the Gulf.
Laklalech did not state the breadth of the proposed agreements or when a deal could be signed. Qatar Airways did not respond to an emailed request for comment. And Saudia could not be reached.
The codeshare talks are taking place in a collective effort, which includes the alliance assessment, for the North African airline to gain greater access to the Middle East and Asia.
Royal Air Maroc, which flies to 32 destinations in Africa, all but one in the west of the continent, wants prospective codeshares and an alliance membership to drive traffic through its Casablanca hub.
Asked if the airline is looking at Etihad Airways Partners as part of its global alliance evaluation, Laklalech said the airline is “considering” all of its options.
Etihad Airways Partners, announced last month by the Abu Dhabi carrier, offers reciprocal loyalty programmes and joint procurement.

Royal Air Maroc hedges half of 2015 fuel bill

Quote:
Dubai: Morocco’s national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, has hedged half of its 2015 fuel bill over concerns record low oil prices will not last, Habiba Laklalech, the airline’s senior vice-president, said on Tuesday.
Global oil prices have fallen in recent months with benchmark brent crude down more than 31 per cent since June. As of Tuesday afternoon local time, it was trading at $79.47 a barrel, below the $80 psychological barrier.

The North African airline recently made the decision to hedge as part of a five-year plan that expects brent price to be $110 per barrel, Laklalech said in an interview in Dubai. “We want to minimise the volatility,” she said.
Citing commercial reasons, Laklalech declined to state the price bracket the airline has hedged.

Air Arabia considers Moroccan expansion

Air Arabia Egypt is joint-venture subsidiary based in Alexandria.

“The [Egypt] business has turned around positively for us. This year it’s made very good profits … we will wait to see if the stability continues, as this continues we will consider [expanding],” he said.

Hmmm... is it because Royal Air Maroc has been getting Boeing aircraft for its jets? Consider, though, the capacity an A380 can carry, especially for its Hajj operations... if not the actual number of passengers for its long-haul trips. RAM still has its B767-300ERs though, yes? Perhaps it could get the B777-300ER instead of the B747-8I so that the airline can save on fuel costs...
