Royal Air Maroc To Implement IAG’s Avios Platform As Their Loyalty Currency

by John Ollila - Apr 11, 2016 1 Comment

IAG has signed a binding MOU with Royal Air Maroc to implement Avios as the airline’s loyalty currency.

Royal Air Maroc Avios

The IAG unveiled this information on their investor day presentation about the Avios program that I’ll cover on separate post.

[IMG][/IMG]

You can access Royal Air Maroc’s website here.

This means that Avios members can earn and redeem miles for Royal Air Maroc flights.

Royal Air Maroc Avios Map

It is unclear, however, if members from Iberia’s and British Airways program can redeem directly or if they have to move their Avios from the airline specific program to the general one first. IAG is the parent of British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus.

Conclusion

There is British Airways Avios, Iberia Avios and this generic Avios, and you can move Avios between these accounts by linking them first. The number of Avios required for award flights depends which Avios program you use to redeem them from. Isn’t it bit confusing?

Interesting to see if this will end up linking Royal Air Maroc as British Airways and/or Iberia partner airline for earning elite qualifying tier points/miles.

Kenya plans to increase the number of tourists through Morocco airline link

By EVELYN SITUMA

Posted Sunday, June 24 2012 at 17:17

Kenya is reviewing communication links with Morocco to increase the number of tourists from the Maghreb as traditional source markets come under pressure.

The two governments have identified having direct flights between Casablanca and Nairobi and commissioning of a Kenyan embassy in Morocco as key to sustainable tourism.

“Travelling from Morocco to Kenya takes one and a half days. We are trying to talk to the two national carriers KQ and Royal Air Maroc to join forces, but logistical problems have delayed the roll out,’ said Ali Bajaber, the honorary consul for Morocco in Nairobi.

Tourists travelling from Morocco to Kenya have connect flights in Dubai, Paris, Istanbul or Riyadh.

However, Kenya Airways could enter direct flight arrangement with Royal Air Maroc as soon as it acquires the 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

“We have talked to them and what we hear is that it may begin by 2013 or 2014,” Mr Bajabe said, adding that Royal Air had identified Nairobi as a key hub to reach East Africa and the islands of Seychelles and Madagascar.

Abdelilah Benryane, the ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, said that opening a Kenyan consulate in Rabat would ease visa issuance.

Travel between the two countries has increased with around 20 visas being issued per month compared to one after every three months two years ago.
The two officials were speaking when a delegation of tourists from Morocco visited the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) under an exchange programme recently. The delegation said Kenyan hotels were expensive.

“Kenya as a holiday destination is expensive. One week trip to Kenya, from a booking office abroad, in a shared room costs 9,000 euro which is way too expensive,” said Mr Bajabe. Tourists from Morocco to countries like Thailand and Malaysia stand at 30,000 annually.

Morocco boasts of 10 million tourists annually, up from four million in 2007.

The country boasts of a 3,500 kilometre coastline with historical and geographical attractions being key attractions.

KTB is focusing on Africa to increase the number of tourists with only 1.7 million having visited the country last year.

Tourism numbers from Kenya’s key source markets in Europe declined marginally to 312,258 in the first quarter of this year compared to 313,691 last year because of the Eurozone economic crisis and insecurity concerns in Kenya.

However, the Kenya Tourism Federation chief executive officer Agatha Juma sounded sceptical on the issue of a resort city, saying that private investors who were once excited about the idea were casting doubt on the success of the project.

“The vision remains a vision if the issue of land is not addressed. Except for the Isiolo resort city where we have been told that land has been dentified, the rest remains a mirage,” said Ms Juma.

Qatar Airways seeks potential in Africa

DUBLIN // Qatar Airways’ chief executive has ambitions to turn Casablanca into a major airport hub in Africa after a potential stake acquisition in Royal Air Maroc, but right now he is focused on owning part of Italian airline, Meridiana.

“We are not supermen," said Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways. “We are too busy at the moment with Meridiana… we need to do one thing at a time."

A takeover of Meridiana by the Gulf carrier is facing some labour unions opposition in Italy. Mr Al Baker said he will walk away from the deal if it is not resolved by the end of the summer.

“The current owner of Meridiana will not pump anymore money into the company," said Mr Al Baker. “And if they don’t do that , the company may go under with the loss of 4000 jobs. As long as people have jobs, the unions will benefit, but when they lose their jobs, the unions don’t provide them with alternative jobs."

Meridiana was established in 1963 with the aim of promoting tourism on the Italian island of Sardinia. The Italian carrier was delisted from the stock exchange in May 2013. It owns a fleet of 20 aircraft and carries 4 million passengers annually, according to its website.

But Mr Al Baker has aggressive planes for the Italian airline. Speaking on the sidelines of The International Air Travel Association (Iata) in Dublin, he said: “you will see when Qatar Airways become an investor and what will become their [Meridiana’s] size."

“You don’t expect me to be a substantial shareholder and fly MD80s," he added, referring to the 30-year-old McDonnell Douglas MD-80-series aircraft the Italian carrier operates.

Mr Al Baker added that Qatar Airways compliments Meridiana’s network, as the Gulf airline flies 70 frequencies a week into Italy, so Qatar Airway will feed passengers into in the domestic network of Meridiana and their European network.

Mr Al Baker has further ambitions to buy between 25 per cent to 49 per cent stake in Morocco’s flag airline Royal Air Maroc. The acquisition will require a significant improvement to the airline’s Casablanca base. Mr Al Baker sees Africa in a great need for a major airport hub in the continent.

The chief executive said that Qatar will soon be operating a route to Dublin and possibly Belfast in Northern Ireland. It will also start a daily flight to Las Vegas next year.
