Dart - Dallas Area Rapid Transit(lots of picutres)

Probably the most successful station so far.

I couldn't find any renderings but Dallas has future TOD planned at medical city/market center that will be very big. Irving will add a station to current urban development at Las Colinas, which is very close to DFW airport. These stations are both on the future Northwest line and have the potetnial and most likely will be more successful then the ones I could find pictures of. I believe Market center/Medical City and Las Colinas and are the 2 biggest job centers outside of downtown.

I may be somewhat blind, but where in the Park Lane pic is the DART rail lines and station?

I know of three in the city of Dallas. But I believe there are more. Somebody from Dallas may have post that.
I can't find a rendering for the huge Victory project. They use to have it but I believe it's changed.

Department of Transportation approves DART funding

With the stroke of a pen Monday, Federal Transit Administration Deputy Administrator Sandra Bushue set in motion one of the nation's most aggressive rail expansion projects. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, Rep. Pete Sessions, DART officials and area business and community leaders joined her.

The announcement of the $700-million Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA), which kick-starts a $2.5-billion expansion that will lead to the doubling of the DART Rail System to 90 miles by 2013, was made at Victory Station at the American Airlines Center. The grant is the largest ever awarded to DART.

The FFGA – in which the federal government makes a commitment to fund a transportation project over a number of years – will support a 21-mile northwest/southeast "connector" linking Farmers Branch and the Pleasant Grove section of Dallas.

When complete in 2010, the Green Line will serve several regional destinations including Deep Ellum, Baylor University Medical Center, Fair Park, Victory Park, the Dallas Market Center, the Southwestern Medical District, Love Field Airport and downtown Farmers Branch.

Additional branches will extend the Green Line to Carrollton and create a new Orange Line serving Las Colinas and DFW International Airport by 2013. Service also will be extended from Garland to Rowlett in 2012. Altogether, the rail extensions are expected to add 60,000 weekday passenger trips, essentially doubling ridership on the DART Rail System.

Ridership on DART's bus and rail network continues to grow. For the eight months ending on May 31, weekday ridership on DART's bus and rail services was up 10.2% over the same period the year before, to 220,553 – nearly 21,000 more riders a day. During that time, DART Rail averaged nearly 61,000 passenger trips each weekday.

It started with 11 miles of track, 14 stations, and high hopes for success.

Ten years and 129 million passenger trips later, DART Rail - now more than four times its original size -- is making public transit hip in a car culture, delivering an exciting new transit-oriented lifestyle, and laying the groundwork for a $2.4 billion expansion that will more than double its size to just over 90 miles.

June 12 through 16, DART Rail marks its 10th Anniversary with 10 customer appreciation events - including prizes, radio station remotes and live performances by DART Music Station artists.

Painting a new portrait of public transit

"Fast Forward"
The centerpiece of the weeklong anniversary celebration will be a commemorative painting, "Fast Forward," by Cuban American artist and former DART staffer Rolando Diaz. A longtime Dallas resident, Diaz is best known for his striking wall murals in several area restaurants and his 1999 painting, "Pegasus The Guardian" - the signature fundraising piece for the renovation of the giant Flying Red Horse that over the years has become an icon on the downtown Dallas skyline. In "Fast Forward," Diaz once again deploys his bold, colorful style to capture the spirited past, present and future of DART Rail and a vision of North Texas in the decade ahead. The commemorative painting will be published as a poster available for purchase in the DART Store at Akard Station in downtown Dallas.

What a difference a decade makes
DART Rail - the first modern light rail system ever built in the Southwest - has been a hit from its opening day on June 14, 1996, and continues to pick up new customers. As news of the system's success has spread over the years, transit experts and city planners from around the world have toured DART to learn how rail transit is taking hold in an area of the country long known for its love of the private automobile.

On an average weekday, DART trains now serve more than 60,000 passenger trips with stops in Dallas, Garland, Richardson and Plano.

The 45-mile DART Rail System is part of an integrated public transit network that includes nearly 700 state-of-the-art buses and paratransit vans serving 13 cities, 31 miles of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, and the 34-mile Trinity Railway Express (commuter rail) linking downtown Dallas and Fort Worth.

During the 12 months ending September 30, 2005, DART Rail's popularity and a resurgent regional economy drove a ridership gain of 5.1 million to more than 98 million passenger trips system-wide.

Transforming the region as it grows
Everything's bigger in Texas, and transit-oriented development is no exception. More than $3.3 billion in private funds - nearly twice the cost of the DART Rail System - has been invested in exciting, new live-work-play destinations up and down the lines.

And the world is taking notice. Mockingbird Station, Victory Park and South Side on Lamar in Dallas, Eastside Village in Downtown Plano and Galatyn Park in Richardson have become showcase models for the latest innovations in transit-oriented development.

Meanwhile, plans are under way for more developments along forthcoming rail lines that will extend DART Rail to Farmers Branch, Irving and Carrollton. DART services also are key elements of the City of Dallas' Comprehensive Plan now under development.

DART poised to double and deliver for decades to come
This summer, construction begins on 45 miles of light rail extensions stretching northwest and southeast from the Dallas city center. By 2013, plans call for DART Rail to double in size to just over 90 miles and 62 stations.

Congress is now reviewing a $700 million Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) with DART to help fund the $2.4-billion rail expansion project. The FFGA is expected to receive final approval by the Secretary of Transportation in early summer, allowing DART to begin construction on the southeast rail extension linking downtown Dallas, Deep Ellum, Fair Park, South Dallas and Pleasant Grove; and the northwest extension serving the Dallas medical and market centers, Dallas Love Field Airport, Farmers Branch and Carrollton.

A branch off the northwest line will extend service to the Las Colinas Urban Center in North Irving and to DFW International Airport. In addition, the existing Blue Line will be extended from Garland to Rowlett.

Congress reviewing $700 million rail expansion grant


DART receives boost from U. S. Department of Transportation

The Office of Management and Budget and the Federal Transit Administration of the Department of Transportation have approved a $700 million grant application for Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) that will kick-start a $2.4 billion light rail expansion, doubling the DART Rail System to 90 miles by 2013. It is expected to receive final approval by the Secretary of Transportation after Congress completes its required 60-day review of the application.

The Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) will go toward a 21-mile portion of the project running from Pleasant Grove to Farmers Branch. The first $80 million of federal funding already is included in President Bush's proposed FY 2007 budget.

Final approval of the FFGA will allow DART to begin construction this summer on a southeast rail extension linking downtown Dallas, Fair Park, South Dallas and Pleasant Grove, and a northwest extension serving the Dallas medical and market centers, Dallas Love Field Airport, Farmers Branch and Carrollton. An additional branch will serve Las Colinas Urban Center in North Irving and DFW International Airport. Service also will be extended from Garland to Rowlett.

"We're grateful to Senator Hutchison and the entire North Texas Congressional delegation for their consistent support. It's another demonstration of DART's broad region-wide support," DART Board Chairman Mark Enoch said. "Such strong backing makes all the difference in the competitive environment of federal transportation funding."

DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas said regional support and the rail system's growing reputation as a "national model" has contributed to its success in securing federal support.

"Our record for building a popular rail system on-time and under budget, coupled with $3.3 billion in private transit-oriented development, is unmatched in the transit industry," Thomas said. "Now, we're ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work on the next phase of our expansion."

Ridership on DART's bus and rail network continues to grow. For the six months ending March 31, weekday ridership on DART's bus and rail services is up 10.6% to 218,924 -- nearly 21,000 more riders a day. During that time, DART Rail averaged more than 60,000 trips each weekday.

2 new light rail lines going up. I cant wait

Green Line-(completed 2009)

Please note that the dark blue line is the Trinity Railway Express, which is a commuter rail line with service approximately every half hour during the morning and evening rush, every hour during weekday off-peak periods, and every hour and a half on Saturdays. All the other lines are light rail.

The Green Line is projected to open in stages during 2009 and 2010. The Orange Line is projected to open in stages during 2011 through 2013. The Blue line extension to Rowlett is projected to open in 2012.

In addition to the Green, Orange, and Blue Line expansions, there is a study underway to increase the capacity through the downtown area. The downtown segment will likely be near capacity once the new lines are open. The study will look at a range of options that include 1) modest improvements to the signaling system and train headways, 2) a second surface line through downtown, 3) a second line through downtown that features a mix of at-grade and tunnel segments, 4) a full subway tunnel through downtown, and 5) a downtown streetcar system The study area is illustrated on the following map:

I had no idea the system was that large. I always thought it was just one single line.

I guess that was just an ignorant assumption on my behalf, considering how American car cities love public transport....

i love dallas and its mass transit system. it has been growing ever since the first line opened.

i cant wait for the orange and green lines to open. green is under construction and orange is in design now.

Fort Worth will soon be expanding the Trinity Commuter rail to its second line. It will be a diesel Regiosprinter style line running along existing tracks from Southwest Fort Worth to the north end of DFW airport. Further approved plans include a line from Denton to Carrollton, where commuters can switch to the DART rail line being built to Carrollton.

Are there parking lots at each station? I'm not sure who would use the light rail since it seems much easier to get in your car and drive to your destination.

DART earns international recognition

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is being recognized the best transit agency in North, South and Central America at the annual MetroRail conference. The "Best Metro Americas" award was presented March 31.

DART was selected over transit properties in New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Integration with other transit modes, customer service, value for money, safety and high performance standards were a few of the categories in which DART was judged. Event organizers said the awards were created, "to identify and reward those companies who have demonstrated an unparalleled ability to succeed and continually set standards of excellence."

It's strange it was given to a city with no heavy rail, a light rail system with 70,000 rides per day, and a commuter rail line with 10,000 rides per day.

These awards (the APTA awards are another one) are the type that every agency gets as long as they're a member of the organization. They just get handed around from one transit operator to the next year after year, but they're really only meaningful as some propaganda to put in press releases or plaster buses and trains with.

I guess it's "Agency" and not "System"

Besides what quashlo said which is probably true, do you think they also look at how well a system tries to be successful on it's own terms?
