Our newest subforum...
All "rate the tall" threads must be created as a poll, so that votes can be more easily tracked. Any thread that is not created as a poll will be locked and deleted once a proper thread has been created.
ALL threads must be created with the same poll format, which is 15 poll options, with the voting options going from "10.0" to "3.0 or less" in .5 increments. New Title form: ""Tower Name l CITY l Height l Floors"" The buildings in this list are for any skyscrapers not found in the Top100-300 sections. The list is organised by region and city, so check it to avoid creating duplicate threads. You can also look for buildings by using the search key and typing the building or city name. Threads featuring interesting, but perhaps not tall enough buildings (to be among the World's 300 tallest) will be considered on a case by case basis. A City's tallest highrise or notable highrise, would most likely be allowed, while the local Best Western will not. An innovative design like Foster's Swiss Re would be OK, but a slab like NYC'S AT&T Longlines Building would not... If folks have any questions, fire away! Hi Jasonhouse, I think this is great. I didn't even think it would be possible to transfer the threads from the old forum. If it is, awesome!
There's just one thing. You say that all the "Rate Our Talls" threads should be made as a poll because votes could be tracked more easily. There's a problem with this though. I can only give so many voting choices, so it would be the integers from 0-10. This means if someone wants to give 8.5/10 or 7.25/10, for example, they can't do it. The results would be more accurate without the polls, I think. I guess I could ask people to reply with their rating, and vote as well; I would only consider the posted ratings and the poll results could be for everyone to look at. Is that what you were thinking? People might be tempted to just vote and not reply though. Anyway, that was the only thing I was concerned about. |

I can customize the polls feature to allow as many options as you need. It is currently set to 15, but could easily be increased to 20. At 20, there should be plenty of resolution for voting.
20 options would allow for 10+ 10 9.5 9.0 8.5 8.0 7.5 7.0 6.5 6.0 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.0 0.0 If someone can't convey thier opinion of the building with this many options, then that would be thier problem, not yours or mine. ![]() So that would be OK, yes? And remember, if I made like you and Jack mods of this section, then you would be able to manipulate threads within this forum, and also change/adjust polls as needed. I think that using the polls feature is truly a no brainer. |

Okay, that sounds good. Can you make it 21 options though? That way I could make the poll include everything from 0 to 10 at intervals of 0.5. When people rate a building 11/10 or anything like that I just make it a 10, so there's no need for a 10+ option.
Alright, so once that's taken care of, I'm all ready to make # 38 Thanks a lot, JH!

21 it is...
BTW, I have learned that we will not beable to move thread from the old forum to the new one (so far as we know right now), because it is a different software platform, and they aren't compatible. It would be greatly appreciated if you could manually transfer the threads to here from WSF. Perhaps we can start anew, at #1, and work our way down? The best way to do this is to click on "edit" of the first post of the thread, "copy" all of the text and code, and then "paste" it into a new thread here. The UBB IMG tags will still work here, so there won't be a problem doing it this way. We will lose old votes/replies, but I have a feeling that we will get MANY new votes/replies here in no time flat. |

Restart all the threads?? That's a tall order! I mean the original idea was to stop at #55, and #37 is already two thirds of the way there. If I keep making them at the pace of three per week like I have been doing so far, it will take another 12 weeks just to get back to this point! I have the old ratings saved on my HD, so they are not lost. Oh by the way I just looked on WSF and the Rate our talls section is gone along with all the threads.
Another point: don't you think the World Skyscraper forumers who participated in the threads might not feel like posting their ratings for all the buildings they rated nearly three months ago? The good sports who have been rating them since #1 might get tired of it and give up on the threads entirely. Anyway, it seems like a waste to have to re-do nearly three months worth of threads just because of this forum switch. Oh I should point out that in the lastest thread that I created here (#37), the number of ratings received was no different from the average of the first 36 at WSF. |

How many view these will change in time. Trust me, there is going to to be WAY more traffic here than at WSF (already about triple), this will invariably lead to more votes, especially since it will be in the form of an easy to use poll. People gobble those up.
I wouldn't expect anyone to redo all of the ROT threads in justa day or two, but figure it woudl be best to start over, and post perhaps 3-5 a week, just like before. I plan on moving a couple of them over myself, later this evening, and I am going to start at #1. |

Wait, so do you want me to do the old ones all at once, or at the regular pace? How are you going to move them over if they're gone? They have been deleted, or they aren't visible anymore, at least.

YIKES. I just noticed that myself... Uhh, I am wondering where they went, or better yet, WHY they went. Man, that will suck if those threads are gone, because it is pretty easy to copy/paste a thread if you know how to do it. I could have done all of them within an hour, tops...

Start right from #1?
I know I have the appetite for it But as DMac said, some people might cop out..but we do have a chance of letting new voters vote so I dont know...it may mean waiting a long time before we can to review the results ![]() On the other hand with a voting system, we dont have to restrict to 3 a week. I'm all for the idea although I'd have to make mental readjustments to voting in intervals of 0.5 (maybe I am a wee bit critical to wanna vote like 7.9) How about this..DMac saves the previous scores and reports those BUT for the benefit of the newbirds we start from #1 and if DMac has the appetite he can report results as (1)Old forum (2)New forum

Elaborating on what I meant previously..
since the earlier buildings would have 2 sets of results, old and new, we could increase their accuracy by averaging them. This would sort of equalise the scales with the new buildings. |

Yeah I was a little peeved that all the trouble I took to save all the ratings for every building for this whole time would be for nothing if we started over.
I don't know if averaging the results would be good because you would for sure have people who rated the building twice... so it wouldn't be accurate. |

The degree of inaccuracy would be minimized.
People's opinions might change with time..so this sort of reflects their true scores. IMO it would be more inaccurate to compare the old scores of buildings in old forum WITH voted scores of new buildings on this one. (The main reason being that now people only vote in 0.5 intervals) And if you were worried about folks not wanting to vote twice..this method does not make anyone's efforts go to waste as we still rely on the old scores. But..the ball's in your court and you've done a GREAT job wirh rate our talls!

Thanks Raffles!
![]() The ball is actually in Jasonhouse's court. I would just keep doing the threads the way I was doing them before, but he's got some bigger ideas for the threads. Kind of a huge database with all our ratings it seems. |

That's OK, it won't matter for quite some time. I mayt even open another sub-forum, which would be an "open" forum for folks to post a ROT style thread on any building they wanted folks to vote on. I think it could be a real draw in time.

In time, yes. But if Jan wants what I think he wants (a sort of interactive buildings database, if you will) then you need to have some order to things. When the ROT's were first started at the WSF all of the OZscrapers guys told me I was clinically insane. And you must admit (due to recent events over at WSF) that things can get out of hand. If you're looking at an interactive database, great. But for the love of God, don't let everyone run wild with it.

I will soon create a special announcement for this forum that will list the 100 tallest highrises in the World, so that folks may be able to include the ranking and basic statistics as part of thier threads...
