Construction work on the new Storm Jameson student residences at Leeds University. This is located next to Springfield Mount and will give the uni some state-of-the-art halls at the heart of the campus.

High-spec facilities at Leeds University
Storm Jameson Court is the name that has been agreed for the new state-of-the-art accommodation to open next June on the campus of the University of Leeds. This will be a 459-bedroom addition, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows n each room, at a total cost of £27.1m.

The name is in memory of former student Margaret Storm Jameson, author of more than 50 books.
Richard Handscombe, Head of Sales and Marketing for the University of Leeds Conferencing, Events and Accommodation, says that the facility will introduce a new benchmark for university conference accommodation. He can offer a wide range of services, from day meeting rooms for groups as small as four, to residential facilities for up to 550 delegates.

Good to see a photo at least, every time I walk past the buildings there are absolutely shooting up!

The accommodation blocks are still going up ridiculously fast!

Another piece of news regarding the uni. Nothing too major but plans are about to be submitted to make changes to University Square in order to provide better seating, cycling spaces and just a better general environment. You can check out the plans here including a couple of renders.

Looks good. I actually think that this part of the Uni is fine though- I mean it could do with improvements, but I'd much rather see money invested in improving the open spaces around the 1970s part of the Uni near the Roger Stevens Building.

It's also a shame that the area just to the south of this isn't being revamped. There are lots of steps and ramps in this area which don't really work together. Lots of places to trip over.

Too right, but I've thought for a long time that a single granite surface would work from the Union to the Parkinson building. Cleaning up some of the terraced buildings off Lifton Place would also help.

The renders are on display in the Union at the moment.

The gardens in that square between the Roger Stevens, EC Stoner building and the Worsley Building look quite nice I thought.

There's plenty of barren concrete between the Roger Stevens and the steps that could be jazzed up though.

^ That car park kicks the arse of the one in Sheffield they're so proud about!

The new halls on campus look to be really coming along now, has anyone got a camera in that area?

I certainly haven't seen these though there was a much smaller sketch of the first building floating around a while back.

The first proposal is for Innovation City Leeds and there are a few post about the project earlier in this thread. The second is for the car park proposed to be sited next door to Innovation City. As multi-storey car parks go, I think it looks quite good.

Good find.

I presume the building and car park will be sited on what is now the big car park behind the row of buildings containing the Fenton pub on Woodhouse Lane.

The brick cladding is going on parts of Storm Jameson at the moment, while the neighbouring children's centre is almost complete externally (no pics)

The brickwork is going on underneath the plastic sheeting. Exciting!

This from the Business Desk:

Quote:
Innovation City project delayed

14th January 2010

A YORKSHIRE science park has been put on hold.

The £65m Innovation City Leeds project has been delayed as a result of the economic downturn.

The project would have seen a new building on Leeds University campus to enable academics, entrepreneurs and companies to meet and exchange ideas.

Its backers have said although the scheme has been delayed, it would still go ahead. It had originally been schedueld to have been completed in 2011.

Partners include Leeds University, Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds City Council
There's a render somewhere on here of how the project should look when it's finally built, but I can't find it.

Is the tower crane up in the university area a new one up or has it been there a while?
Apologies if it's been there some time but I only just noticed it for the first time the other day.

I haven't noticed a crane there either. I'm going up to the Uni tomorrow so I'll take a look and see what it's related to.

On Friday, Lifton Place was being dug up outside the Union, which I presume signals a start for the re-paving scheme mentioned a few posts back.

There's a crane in the grounds of what used to be the Grammar School - now part of the Uni Business School I think.

Think that might be for a new law school building? I was in the Eldon yesterday with some Leeds uni postgrads and apparently the swimming pool is nearing completion.

I only spotted it in the afternoon, but it looks to be a new law school building on Moorland Road (renders in the link below)

http://www.law.leeds.ac.uk/about/new...ng/details.php

edit: (see page 8. Looks good clad in stone)http://www.law.leeds.ac.uk/assets/im...esentation.pdf

The foundations are reasonably deep and the crane is standing right in the centre. I'd love to confirm that it's a luffing jib type, but I don't have a luffing clue about cranes.

Yup, it's a big black box on Clarendon Way. Sadly, it isn't architecturally impressive.

I walk past the site every day... Took this picture yesterday, showing the crane. The site's just a hole at the moment:

Has anyone got any images of what the new building will look like? I asked a builder on site and he told me it was the new Leeds University business school. Competition of course to Leeds Met Business School in the Rose Bowl.
