Easter trip to Budapest (and Bratislava)

During easter I went to Budapest to take pictures, meet some relatives, hunt for highrises in the suburbs, take a daytrip to Bratislava and enjoying the spring (28 degrees at the warmest).

The pictures come in a little messy order...

Budapest have, as very many other cities in the old eastern Europe, a lot of commieblocs, but since I didn't take any pictures of them, we'll start of at the South Railway station, Deli pú, close to my hotel. Another architectural masterpiece from the 60s or 70s. Somehow I forgot to take a picture of the frontal facade.

Trackside view. The red trainset to the right is the same as NSB will buy, the Stadler Flirt.

Interior

The sunken plaza in front.

The West line station, Nyugati pú, located on the east side of the Danube

THe Hungarian opera

Metro line 1, the oldest metro in continental Europe. It runs directly under the street.

Váci utca, Budapest's main pedestrian street

Erzebet híd (Elisabeth bridge)

Newer adition to the city's architecture

Not quite as new...

The inside of a traditional city block

The main market hall

detail from the outside roof

I'll promise to post some nicer photos in a later update.

Budapest ranks among my favourite cities, even though I've never visited it myself.
Looking forward to the next set.

Time for some more touristy shots...

Mathias church on the castle hill.

Fishermen's Bastion

The view to the northeast

The Hungarian Parliament. One of the most beautiful buildings in the world in my opinion.

Night view from Margit Sziget.

Bratislava

Thank you all
Before the last batch of photos from Budapest, let's take a train ride some 250 kilometres to the northwest. To the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. I had never been to the city before, but it deserves more than only half a day.

Bratislava central station

The Victory monument

Poster for a planned 32 story residential skyscraper

New office building for the Unicredit Bank

The TV-tower (I went there) and a Skoda trolley bus

The park behind the presidential palace

Presidential palace. By coincidence I arrived just moments before the Palestinian president Abbas came on a state visit.

The president of Slovakia and the Palestine inspect the honorary guard. The guy behind the flag pole is some kind of security agent I guess

The old town square

The 200 metres tall TV-tower is located in the hills above town. From the bus stop there's a kilometer or so to walk uphill.

Can you spot the tower?

In one of the top "compartments" of the tower there's a restaurant (maybe 80 metres above ground). My final destination

Due to bad light, reflection and dirty windows the view was somewhat spoiled, but the beer was really good (12% alcohol).

Back in town again. This is the castle. Unfortunalty under renovation..

One of the bridges across Danube

More bridges

Skyline shots

Slovakia introduced the Euro from 2009

And finally, the upside-down pyramide of the Slovak radio

That's all I had time for.

Back to Budapest for the final update...

O, I miss Bratislava so much! Thanks for the tour Never got to their central station or castle, so nice to see those pictures.

Hey, that highrise to the right wasn't there when I took the same picture in '06!

Beautiful photos of a place I really would like to visit!

Like the Louvre in Paris and the Parliament in London, the Hungarian parliament certainly is among the most beautiful buildings in the world imo...

The last photos from Budapest. That day I was all over the place...

The area on the east side of Arpád Hid with new office buildings.

Budapest don't really have that many highrises, so this is one of the tallest, the Országos Egészségbiztosítási Pénztár (The national pension fund headquarters)

And this one just a few metres away,
Országos Rendör-Fökapitányság (National Police headquarters)

Hösök tere

City park next to Móricz Zsigmond Körtér

Sunset next to Lágymányosi Híd

A few more nightviews. First from Margit Sziget

And from the Citadel

And finally, the sunset from the car towards the airport.
