UPPER HILL | Radisson Hotel | 5* | 244 rooms | 8 fl | T/O

Nairobi Radisson Hotel - Under Construction - 2010
244 Rooms - 5 Star

The Nairobi Radisson is currently under construction in the city’s fastest growing financial and business district, Upper Hill. The 244-room five-star hotel is scheduled to open in 2010.

Although the Rezidor Group will run the new hotel, the building itself will be owned by Elgon Road Developments Ltd, a Kenyan-registered real estate company.

Among the facilities at the hotel will be a restaurant with private dinning, a bar lounge, a coffee shop, 10 conference rooms, a large ballroom, a swimming pool and sundeck, a garden with terrace and wellness/fitness facilities.

Nairobi meets our growth strategy and underlines how important East Africa is for our further development in key cities and resort destinations, said Kurt Ritter, president and chief executive of Rezidor while confirming that the project was still on-course.

“We see a promising potential in this region and are glad to be present in Nairobi, East Africa’s commercial and aid hub,” he said.

The Radisson will be only the second major hotel developed in Nairobi over the last ten years, with the other being the Panari, which opened its doors in 2005. The hotel is located on Mombasa Road half-way between the CBD and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The hotel was commissioned in 2005.

In addition to conventional hotel facilities, the 136-room Panari boasts of a 15,000 square feet ice-skating rink, two movie theatres and a casino.

Nairobi currently is home to about a dozen five-star hotels, with average room charges falling between $125 and $250 per night. The hotels include the Nairobi Hilton, the Stanley, the Grand Regency, the Norfolk, the Nairobi InterContinental and the Serena.

Many of these hotels, such as the Norfolk and the Stanley, have undergone extensive renovations in the last three years to upgrade facilities in what analysts say was a repositioning to take advantage of Kenya’s then booming tourist industry.

Last year, the sector is estimated to have earned the country in excess of $750 million.

The flow of tourists this year has however virtually dried up following the outbreak of violence over the disputed December 27 general elections. The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) says that it will require a marketing investment of over $20 million to revive the sector once the political issues are sorted out.

Entry of the Rezidor Hotel Group into Kenya will expand its African network, which includes facilities in Tunisia, Egypt and South Africa. The group is one of the fastest growing hotel companies in the world, featuring a portfolio of 322 hotels in operation and under development with almost 66,000 rooms in 48 countries.

The group operates the brands Radisson SAS Hotels & Resorts, Regent Hotels & Resorts, Park Inn and Country Inns & Suites in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

In November 2006, the group was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, although its headquarters are based in Brussels, Belgium.

Kenya: Rezidor to Open a New Radisson in Nairobi

Quote:
The Rezidor Hotel Group (STO:REZT) arrives in East Africa's largest city, Nairobi/Kenya: The company will manage the new Radisson Hotel Nairobi featuring 244 rooms located in Upper Hill, the upscale new financial and business district of Nairobi. The hotel is scheduled to open in early 2010.
Nairobi meets our growth strategy and underlines how important East Africa is for our further development in key cities and resort destinations', comments Kurt Ritter, President & CEO of Rezidor. 'We see a promising potential in this region and are glad to be present in Nairobi, East Africa's commercial and aid hub.'

The Radisson Hotel Nairobi is owned by Elgon Road Developments Limited and will include a restaurant with private dinning, a bar lounge, a coffee shop, 10 conference rooms, a large ballroom, a swimming pool and sundeck, a garden with terrace and wellness/fitness facilities.

From the wildlife to the nightlife, Nairobi is a city unlike any other. With a fantastic music scene, excellent international restaurants and an endless and colourful array of shops and markets, there is plenty on offer for the visitor. Just outside the city is Nairobi National Park, 113 square kilometres of plains, cliffs and forest. The park is home to large herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Giraffe and more. Rhino, Cheetah, and a large number of Lions are all found here, living wild within 20 minutes of the city.

About the Rezidor Hotel Group:

The Rezidor Hotel Group is one of the fastest growing hotel companies in the world. The group features a portfolio of 322 hotels in operation and under development with almost 66.000 rooms in 48 countries.

It wasn't built to the best of my knowledge. I have a feeling this is just one of the string of projects under construction along Elgon road at the moment, going by the name of the company behind the project (Elgon road development Ltd).

Just wait and see.
