Sanssouci - part 1

All right, let's cheat a little bit today. I know the city of Potsdam is not in Berlin, but it borders Berlin, and most tourists who visit Berlin also pay a visit to Potsdam, mostly because of Sanssouci, the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.
It is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. While Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart, it too is notable for the numerous temples and follies in Sanssouci Park. The palace was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 to fulfil Frederick's need for a private residence where he could relax away from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court. This is emphasized by the palace's name: a French phrase (sans souci) which translates loosely as "without cares" or "carefree" symbolising that the palace was a place for relaxation rather than a seat of power.
After World War II, the palace became a tourist attraction in East Germany. Sanssouci and its extensive gardens became a World Heritage Site in 1990 under the protection of UNESCO. The pictures you can see below were taken in 2006, when the palace and many other buildings on the palace grounds were under renovation.

256. The building next tot the palace garden's entrance. Quite impressive already:

257. A large statue and a windmill in the background, which was built under king Frederick to add rustic charm:

258. The palace on its hill with vinyards:

259. Climbing up the stairs:

260. Looking back over my shoulders:

261. One of the wings:

262. Decorations on the roof:

263. How romantic:

264. The windmill, the only building on the palace grounds that was completely destroyed during World War II:

265. Once more the windmill:

266. One of my first experiments with my camera's shutter time. That's why the fountain's water looks frozen:

Some more Sanssouci pictures will follow in just a minute!

Sanssouci - part 2

Continuing with Sanssouci...

267. A statue reaching for the sky:

268. The Orangery Palace, built by Friedrich Wilhelm IV, in his seat of Potsdam, from 1851 to 1864:

269. The Chinese House, a garden pavilion built about seven hundred meters southwest of the Sanssouci Summer Palace:

270. Kitsch or art? Who knows:
image hosted on flickr

271. I think this building is named Belvedere, but I'm not sure:
image hosted on flickr

272. The New Palace, situated on the western side of the Sanssouci royal park:
image hosted on flickr

273. The building was begun in 1763 and was completed in 1769. It is considered to be the last great Prussian baroque palace:

274. The University of Potsdam is situated across four campuses in Potsdam including the New Palace of Sanssouci. This is part of the campus:

Not the worst place to study, isn't it?

I've been to the Sanssouci Park many times. I enjoy walking around there when I have a day off and the weather is nice. And it's a great place to take pictures, as you can see!

I know I have them somewhere, but I'll have to dive into my archives for that. So I won't have them right away, but I'll try to post some here in the coming days.

Fantastic image courtesy, Generator

Would be better to see your photos in a higher resolution, thou

Have you been to the "outlandish" quarters of Potsdam already? Speaking about the Dutch Quarter (that in Germany, I have to emphasize ), Russian colony Alexandrowka, French quarter, Weberviertel etc.

Thanks everyone. It's been some days since my last post here, but my internet connection died somewhere last week. Fortunately I was able to bring it back to life today, so I will post some pics tonight.

Mixed pictures - part 1

Some mixed pictures from many different boroughs of Berlin (basically I'm going to post some left-overs from other series now).

275. A billboard and child in the Holteistrasse in Friedrichshain:
image hosted on flickr

276. Birds on a roof in Köpenick:
image hosted on flickr

277. An old building in Köpenick:
image hosted on flickr

278. A timber-framed house in the same area:
image hosted on flickr

279. The beautiful facade of the Castle of Köpenick:
image hosted on flickr

280. This building in Friedrichshain started construction in the 90s. It was supposed to become a shopping center/office building. Then the developer went bankrupt and the half-finished building stood as an empty shell for 10 years or so. Recently a hotel company (Andel's Hotels) bought the building and by now it's finally finished. The buildings in the front are former slaughterhouses, waiting for redevelopment:
image hosted on flickr

281. The Generator Hostel, one of Europe's biggest hostels with over 900 beds (I'm not adevertising anything here):
image hosted on flickr

282. A street with parking problems in Friedrichshain:
image hosted on flickr

283. The U-Bahn station Senefelderplatz
image hosted on flickr

284. The former train tracks to Anhalt with a current U-Bahn bridge above it, in Kreuzberg:
image hosted on flickr

285. People playing football (or soccer if you like) in the Weserstrasse in Friedrichshain:
image hosted on flickr

286. And a guy (actually a former collegue of mine) doing some stunts:
image hosted on flickr

That's it for now. I hope you enjoyed viewing, and if not, you won't get any refunds.

293. Let's try to post a panorama from the Museum Island here:
image hosted on flickr

294. Maybe one more panorama, taken from the panorama platform at Potsdamer Platz?
image hosted on flickr

295. Now that I'm busy I could as well post one more panorama. Taken from the Kreuzberg (a small mountain) towards the city center:
image hosted on flickr

296. Taken from the Generator Hostel in Prenzlauer Berg towards the city center in the east:
image hosted on flickr

297. And this really is the last picture for today. This is the Spandau Citadel:

Photo 296:

I remember the view over there, I used to stay theire ones. Absolutly fantastic spot with a great atmosphere and a easy connection to Alexanderplatz.

Great pictures, try to post one in the Photo Contests!
