If the archieve was so important then they should have stored it in a better building. Deserves them right.

According to the latest news:
- The subway construction was indeed the cause of the accident. A concrete wall inside the construction site collapsed, causing a landslide,
- Many of the documents can probably be rescued from the rubble,
- Two people are still missing.

Sorry, but you are a moron. People died/are missing, tons of valueable material is gone and you say "deserves them right" .

He/she was talking about the archive not about missing people. Don't allege him/her maliciousness when there is none.

Collapsed Cologne Archives Show Challenge of Preserving History

Rescue personnel stand near the rubble of what was part of the Cologne city archive
Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: The city of Cologne's archive suddenly collapsed Wednesday
Even as the search for survivors continues, experts ponder the extent of the historical material that has been lost after part of the Cologne city archive caved in -- and how to protect cultural heritage.

That is a shame things like this happens nowdays. A situation so is perfectly avoideable using tecnics to reinforce the grownd down the building before allowing the TBM acrossing under the baseman.

The TBM didn't cause the collapse.

It was a concrete wall inside the tunnel which collapsed, and that caused a landslide right below the archive building.

No one cares about the building - the loss of the great human heritage stored in this building was the desaster!!!!

An unfortunate accident. Hopefully the historical records held in the building can be largely recovered as it would be a great shame for them to be lost.

I also hope that the construction of the Stadtbahn tunnel isn't delayed for too long as well.

The first thing is to think about the victims, the rest is history, even if I love and lived with history. I have learned that time goes by and a lot of history is lost anyway. History has point if you think about it. 99% of the documents of archives are never consulted, but the 1% remaining worth it... Damn... world...
(numbers not accurate, just to expose a philosophical point)

You don't need history to live, you live history... This accident is history already... We must learn from it.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of life. Something very similar happened here in Shanghai about 4 years ago during the construction of Line 4. A building collapsed above a tunnel near Nanpu Bridge due to Metro construction, and delayed the full opening of Line 4 by over 1 year.

As far as I know such things happened in Athens, Barcelona and Huangzhou too. In Munich 1994 a whole Bus vanished in the ground, three died.
