This is the same area today. As you can see, there's no bridge and the Mill Channel is no longer visible. Instead, there's the modern Banca Transilvania building.
I'm pretty intrigued that this specific area (Piata Mihai Viteazu, the buildings next to the bridge etc) looks as it looks today. My opinion is that it has even greater potential than Piata Unirii. Instead, it's full of cables and traffic.

You're right, the whole area should be rethought completely, because it could be turned into something much more beautiful/useful and it's potential is currently underexploited. Take, for example, the middle of the square. It's a pedestrian space, but very few people actually use it. Sure, it looks like crap and it urgently needs a renovation, but that's not the only reason.
I just hope someone from the administration will notice one day and do something about it...

Sper sa fie restaurate acele statui si reliefuri si montate la loc, ca nu mai are niciun farmec acum cladirea stiind cum a fost, si ce-a ajuns.

Ar fi frumos sa puna alaturi si un panou cu o imagine completa a constructiei a caror ruine apartin (asta-n caz de n-au facut-o deja), ptr. a-si face omul o parere, sa stie cam la ce se uita. Oricum, Clujul pare a fi pe maini bune.

In planurile Planwerk (cei care au renovat Piata Unirii) era folosita piatra cubica de culoare mai deschisa pentru a marca zidurile (contururile) vechilor cladiri. Imi placea ideea, dar vad ca nu s-au tinut de ea.

Ba s-au tinut, dar diferenta e foarte subtila. Si eu am crezut acelasi lucru la inceput. Daca te uiti atent, o sa observi traseul zidurilor, e marcat cu o piatra putin mai deschisa la culoare. Poate gasesc si o poza...

Edit: asa, aici se vede chiar foarte bine.
