It would be a slightly bigger problem than terrorists taking over a 747. I don't see you guys decommissioning them.

Lufthansa tests Nordic capitals for emergency Airbus landing
15 September 2010
AFP

Lufthansa took the world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus 380, on a whistle-stop tour of the Nordic capitals on Wednesday to show off the leviathan and test whether the region's airports were capable of accommodating the plane.

"Of course this is good marketing for Lufthansa, but today they are also checking the airfield's potential for emergency cases, if the plane would have to make an unscheduled landing," Helsinki airport director Juha-Pekka Pystynen told AFP just before the Airbus landed in Helsinki.

The Airbus 380 stopped in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Oslo before returning to Frankfurt.

These airports have to have longer and stronger runways, large plane parking areas and extended passenger bridges in order to accommodate the A380, Lufthansa Finland country manager Marek Kuchta told AFP.

He said however that even though Lufthansa flights to Asia pass over the region, the company was not yet contemplating making any of the Nordic capitals a regular stop-over for the A380.

"Lufthansa will investigate the markets, its demands and capacity, once the market picks up. But it's far to early to speculate now," he said.

He added that all of the Nordic capitals could support the plane, with minor improvements, such as the bigger passenger bridge which has yet to be built in Helsinki, while Oslo's airport is laying down more asphalt to accommodate the plane.

Lufthansa has three Airbus 380s in service now, with a fourth one on the way at the end of the year, and 11 more in the next five years.

At 73 metres long and with a wingspan of nearly 80 metres, the double-decker Airbus 380 dwarfs other passenger planes.

Wednesday marked the first time a plane of this size had landed in Finland, and the event drew hundreds of planespotters into the drizzle to watch the touch-down.

Airport personnel stood on catering trucks and forklifts to watch the plane land, while even a few men in suits were spotted cheering on the airport roof.

I want to fly this monster!

It puts new standard for comfort, at least here I see reason why to pay for business class.

Business class in Boeing 737 or similar planes (including old airbuses) was just ridiculous, don't see a single reason to pay triple price. Especially non existing business class is in small airplanes where "business" class passengers sit in same chairs, the only difference they board plane first + get plane food without extra cost (which is never good compared to restaurant).

meh...

I like the new 747-8 more than the A380; it just looks better.
