never from 2011 on. The first 12 Qantas (without 'u'!) A380s will have first class and are dedicated for the routes from Sydney and Melbourne to London (only the flights via Singapore) and Los Angeles. The remaining 8 A380s (then without F) will earliest be delivered in 2012. So 2012 is the year one can expect QF to start upgauging their FRA flights (which always have the highest loads of all QF flights, but not enough F demand).

@hkskyline, deasine:
It was about LH, and their F is in the upper deck. Currently LH's 744s are fitted with the old F, so they have space for 16 F seats in a 2-2 configuration. They don't have too much trouble filling up their F cabins as Frankfurt is one of Europe's wealthiest regions. But all of LH's long haul fleet will be refitted with the new F product (currently only on A388s) which will mean that there's only enough space for 8 F seats in the 744's upper deck. Btw, all of LH's long haul planes have 8 F seats (except those few A343s that don't have F at all and the 744s as mentioned) but one of the largest business cabins around for the respective aircraft type.

Burn marks found in SIA plane
Posted: 03 February 2011 1353 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) said Thursday it found burn marks on electrical wiring in an Airbus A380 superjumbo after smoke entered a lavatory during a flight earlier this week.

The flight crew activated an extinguisher after smelling smoke coming from one of the toilets in the aircraft while the plane was approaching Changi Airport from Hong Kong, said S. Supramaniam, an airline spokesman.

"When the plane landed, our ground crew inspected the aircraft and they discovered some burn marks on some electrical wirings underneath the lavatory, on the cargo hold," he told AFP.

"Airbus and SIA are investigating the matter. We have also inspected all the other A380s and nothing was found."

Supramaniam said there was no fire and the plane landed safely without incident.

SIA became the first airline in the world to commercially fly the double-decker A380 in October 2007. It has 11 A380s in its fleet.

In November last year, an explosion ripped through one engine of an A380 operated by Qantas shortly after takeoff from Singapore with 466 people aboard, forcing it to turn back and make an emergency landing.

Airbus contracts stay secret
3 February 2011
The Age

AIRBUS has succeeded in keeping from the public's gaze documents that detail commercial contracts with Qantas relating to the purchase of its fleet of A380 superjumbos.

Lawyers for the maker of the superjumbo sought the orders in the Federal Court in Sydney yesterday for the documents to remain confidential. The Airbus contracts are among many documents Qantas has supplied to the court to support its damages claim against British jet-engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce.

Justice Steven Rares accepted the application by Airbus to have a purchase agreement for the A380s and parts of a document relating to a bespoke arrangement between Airbus and Qantas kept confidential.

Airbus's lawyer, Jason Potts, cited commercial sensitivity as the primary reason for the documents to remain secret. He said the bespoke arrangement between Airbus and the airline related to "certain rights that were given to Qantas as a launch customer [for the A380] in certain events".

Qantas launched the claim in December against Rolls-Royce for damages arising from a midair engine explosion involving an A380 on November 4. The airline has sought to stymie any bid to shift the matter to British courts if talks over a settlement break down.

Qantas's lawyer, Andrew Bell, SC, said the airline and Rolls-Royce were still in negotiations aimed at reaching a settlement.

The airline's chief executive, Alan Joyce, has said that he would prefer to reach a negotiated settlement with Rolls-Royce rather than seek damages through the courts.

Analysts estimate the grounding could cost Qantas as much as $207 million.

The directions hearing will resume on Wednesday.

Airbus: Delivered 33 Aircraft In January
3 February 2011

PARIS (Dow Jones)--European commercial aircraft builder Airbus said Thursday it had delivered 33 of its airliners in January, including 26 of its A320 family of medium-range, single-aisle jets.

The delivery total included two of its flagship A380 double-decker people carriers to Australian airline Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU).

Toulouse, France-based Airbus said it had booked 32 fresh orders in January, but had also taken a cancellation of 12 of its A330-200F freighters, for a net order intake during the month of 20 aircraft.

Just 26 A320s? That's pretty low, should've been around 35 or so.

Dubai Airports to focus on existing terminals
06 Feb 2011
By Abdul Basit

DUBAI -- Dubai's new Al Maktoum International AirportAl Maktoum International Airport is likely to see another delay in opening of its passenger terminal, which is set to open in October this year.

Dubai Airports, the operator of the two airports in the emirate, is fully focused on its existing passenger terminals as demand is increasing every day.

Last month the operator announced its full year 2010 results that revealed a 15.3 per cent growth in passenger demand over 2009. It is estimated that the airport will handle 52.2 million passengers by the end of 2011 with 11 per cent growth, according to the operator.

Cargo terminal of Al Maktoum International Airport was started in June last year and it was announced that the passenger terminal would be opened in March 2011. It was postponed to October and now Dubai Airports hints at another possible delay.

"We started cargo terminal on 24th of June last year and there is going to be a need to have a passenger operation working on the new airport some stage in the future," Dubai Airports Chief Executive officer Paul Griffiths told Khaleej Times last week in Dubai.

For October deadline Griffiths said, "Its still a possible time, but we are keeping in review and will be making announcement soon as and when we get more information."

"We are focusing on our growth here [Dubai International airport] and reason for that is because the growth is so strong and exceeding our expectations," he said. Growth will be driven by a projected 10 per cent increase in Emirates passenger numbers and an anticipated doubling of flydubai traffic in 2011 as both airlines continue to expand their respective fleets and networks, according to Dubai Airports.

Today Dubai International airport has more than 130 carriers serving 220 destinations on six continents and its home to the world's most profitable airline. Before the end of the decade passenger numbers will approach 90 million making Dubai International the busiest airport in the world in terms of international
 passenger traffic.

Emirates is ordering aircraft and also delaying retirement of existing aircraft so fleet number get bigger and bigger, he added.

"Our problem is that we cannot develop Dubai World Central fast enough to cope with immediate demand so what we have done prioritise the development ....," he added.

Dubai International airport is undergoing a massive development for its Terminal 2 and a new Concourse 3. Concourse 3, set to become the world's first dedicated A380 facility, will boost capacity from the current 60 million passengers annually to 75 million, which, when combined with other facility enhancements and operational efficiencies will boost capacity to 90 million by 2018.

Carriers in the region witnessed around 18 per cent growth in passenger demand last year, compared to an 8.2 per cent international demand during the same period, the aviation body said in its annual performance report that issued on Wednesday.

"Middle Eastern carriers reported the strongest full year growth at 17.8 per cent on the back of a 13.2 per cent capacity increase fueled largely by aircraft deliveries to Gulf-based airlines," the Geneva-based aviation body said.
