It's always nice to see the A380 flying with low approach. Lufthansa allows himself again to fly over the runway. A few minutes before had it been raining very heavily, and I see a nice wet take off. It´s from me the move. The name its Zürich.

China needs time to warm to A380 -Airbus China pres

SHANGHAI, April 7 (Reuters) - Chinese airlines will need some time before they start to warm to the Airbus A380 super jumbo, Airbus's China head said on Thursday.

"Chinese airlines historically have not been very enthusiastic about buying a product early in the programme," Laurence Barron, president of Airbus China, told an aviation conference on Thursday.

"It will take some time for the Chinese airlines to really understand what a great aircraft it is," he said of the A380.

Barron said he saw an impact on airlines from the introduction of high-speed railway lines in China, especially on the Beijing to Shanghai route. A high-speed train linking the two major Chinese cities is set to start operating in June.

This might put pressure on airlines to expand their international routes, boding well for A380 sales.

So far, China Southern Airlines Co Ltd, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, is the only Chinese airline to have ordered the A380.

China Southern has ordered five A380s and said last month that it expected to take delivery of the first in August.

"We continue to see strong traffic growth in China driven very largely by domestic travel, while international traffic is also growing very steadily as well," Barron told reporters in an interview.

China is expected to buy more than 2,000 aircraft over the next five year. Boeing , which has about half of the China market, said last month it sealed deals worth $10 billion with two airlines in China.

Airbus wins 69 gross plane orders in Q1
6 April 2011

PARIS, April 6 (Reuters) - Airbus sold 69 aircraft in the first quarter and delivered 119, the European planemaker said on Wednesday.

After adjusting for cancellations, the Toulouse-based planemaker booked a net total of just one plane order between January and March.

Deliveries of Airbus aircraft over the same period included four A380 superjumbos.

In the latest available figures, Boeing sold 135 planes between Jan. 1 and Mar. 29 and took 88 net orders after adjusting for cancellations.

World's first in-flight duty free outlet on show in Hamburg
AFP
Thu, Apr 7, 2011

Korean Air has unveiled a unique feature on board its new A380 superjumbo -- a luxury duty free shop available to passengers during their flight.

The novel idea, a welcome departure from the duty free trolleys which are traditionally wheeled up and down the aisles, allows passengers to get up and browse the duty free store just as they would at the airport.

Billed by designers AIM Aviation as the "world's first flying duty free shop" the store is fairly compact but allows for around 64 items to be sold in an "attractive and elegant style."

All of the display items have been magnetized, to ensure that they remain on the shelves in case the aircraft hits turbulence.

In a video describing the concept, AIM Aviation's Chris Whetter said that he expected first class passengers to get first access to the shop, followed by business class passengers and economy flyers last of all.

It will be staffed by a full-time sales assistant and will feature products including cosmetics, fragrances, liquors and accessories, with cosmetics brand Lancome understood to have already purchased advertising inside.

The store will take off this June, when Korean Air's first airbus A380 goes into operation on routes which are expected to include Asian hubs such as Narita, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

It's one of several new innovations currently on show at the Aircraft Interiors Expo, which runs through April 7 in Hamburg, Germany.

Skymark Airlines, Japan’s third largest and fast growing airline, signed a contract for four A380s with Airbus, firming up a Memorandum of Understanding announced in November 2010.

The contract was signed on Thursday, 17th February, during a ceremony held at Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse, France, in the presence of Skymark Airlines President, Shinichi Nishikubo, Airbus President and CEO, Tom Enders, and Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy, together with Airbus Japan CEO, Stephane Ginoux.

At the signing ceremony Shinichi Nishikubo said, “We believe that the A380, the world’s most cost-efficient, modern and environmentally friendly aircraft with cutting-edge technologies, will provide us with a strong competitive advantage and safe operation. We will become the very first Japanese airline to offer our passengers a unique and new experience of flying – more space, more comfort and a quieter cabin. With the four-engined A380, we are free from ETOPS constraints and can provide flexible operations.”

“We are pleased to welcome Skymark as our newest and first Japanese A380 customer,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO. “The A380 is the most eco-efficient solution to allow Japan's air traffic to grow in a capacity constrained environment.”
......
Today, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and Air France operate the aircraft on daily services to Narita Airport. Starting from March 27, 2011, Singapore Airlines will extend its A380 operation from Narita to Los Angeles, while Korean Air’s first A380 service to Narita is scheduled on June 1 this year.

Following today's announcement, total firm orders for the A380 stand at 244 from 19 customers worldwide and 43 aircraft have been delivered to five customers.

China Southern's 506-seat A380 cabin plan released

The configuration of China Southern's A380 has reportedly been leaked on Sina Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter. A seating diagram (below) shows the carrier will operate its A380 with 8 first class seats, 70 in business, and 428 in economy for a total of 506.

Of the eight carriers whose seating plans we know (see above chart), the average number of seats is 487, so China Southern's runs on the slightly more cramped side.

For details on the cabin, both first class and business class will be a in 1-2-1 configuration with first on the lower deck and business on the upper deck. Economy will primarily be located on the lower deck in a standard 3-4-3 configuration save for 9/10 rows (the last row only has the 4 middle block of seats) in the rear of the upper deck in a 2-4-2 configuration, like on Singapore Airlines.

China Southern's first A380 flew on 3 March from Toulouse to Hamburg. As of last year's Zhuhai airshow, the aircraft is due to enter service in the middle of this year.

For those of you who do not read Mandarin and are looking to translate the original mini-blog entry, my online translator of choice tells me the configuration is 8 "bold heads", 70 "prime", and 428 "economics".

There are also, reportedly, 19 lavatories as well as 14 galleys fitting 87 meal carts.

2nd Int'l airport possible in 4 years at $600 million
Republica

KATHMANDU, April 9 -- Nepal could bring much-talked about second international airport at Nijgadh in Bara district into operation in four years if the government arranged investment of $ 600 million (Rs 42 billion).

The picture became clear after Landmark Worldwide (LMW), a Korean company appointed to conduct a detailed feasibility study (DFS) finalized its report. The company is submitting the report to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Aviation (MoTCA) on Sunday.

The proposed airport site lies 150 kilometers from Kathmandu by road.

According to the report, the first phase of the airport can be completed by May 2015 with an investment of $600 million, provided the project gets implemented without any hiccups. It will be able to handle 15 million passengers annually along with A380 planes.

The Korean company has suggested to the government to go for second phase of construction only after properly analyzing the air traffic. If the traffic volume grew substantially within short span, the report says the airport could be expanded and completed by 2025, in the second phase.

By the end of the project, the airport will have two independent parallel runways and the total investment will touch around $1 billion.

"It's difficult to forecast the construction of the airport 10 years ahead. Hence, we have left it for the government to decide whether to go for the second phase of construction analyzing the factors like passengers flow," said Country Representative of LMW, Binay B Rawal.

According to the report, the second international project will stretch in an area of 80 square kilometers out of which the 40 sq km will be airport. In the remaining area, the government plans to build well-equipped airport city.

LMW officials disclosed they had finished DFR by the end of January, when its deadline to submit the report expired. However, they had pushed the date of submission after the company had disagreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) over the issue of construction.

Referring to the agreement MoTCA signed with the company, LMW officials said the ministry was supposed to hold discussion on crucial technical and investment issues prior to submitting the report.

"However, we still decided to hand over the report without due consultations as ministry officials did not respond to our repeated calls," said Rawal.

The agreement between MoTCA and LMW states that the government shall prioritize LMW for implementation of the project subject to section 9 of Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) Act.

Rawal said LMW had actually conducted DFR because the government then had assured it of giving high priority to it in a bid to develop the project. "We are still hopeful that the government will not backtrack on the commitment it made to the company that was seriously working to invest and develop the second international airport since 2007," he added.

After receiving the report, officials said the ministry will forward it to the BOOT Committee for review. "Once through, the committee will prioritize the project and forward it to the cabinet for further action," said Ranjan Krishna Aryal, joint secretary at the MoTCA.

Just took the 380 yesterday with SQ for a CDG-Changi trip. I was impressed by the soft ride overall and particularly with the low level of cabin noise at take off. Those Trent engines sure are quiet !
