Korean Air's A380 debuts in the United States
By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY
Aug. 18, 2011

Korean Air completed its inaugural A380 to the United States last week, initiating service on the superjumbo jet between Seoul Incheon and New York JFK on Aug. 9.

With the service, Korean Air became the first airline to deploy an A380 on a regularly scheduled flight across the Pacific from New York.

NYCAviation.com notes that Korean Air's also is "the first A380 livery so far to feature a dominant color other than white. Gawkers at the (New York inaugural) were overheard comparing it to a 'big, shiny Tiffany box.' "

It's also drawing attention for its onboard bars (three) and duty-free shop.

With just 407 seats on its A380s, Korean Air's version of the superjumbo jet is configured with fewer seats than any other passenger airline currently flying it. The airline had already promised "the most spacious A380 anywhere" last fall when it began to reveal the first details as to how it would layout the inside of the aircraft.

Of those 407 seats, there are 12 in Kosmo First Class suites and 301 Economy Class seats on the first level. The second level is home to Korean's Prestige seating section, which includes 94 lie-flat sleepers spaced six feet apart.

The airline says seats in Kosmo Suites section are spaced almost seven feet apart, while the lie-flat seats in the all-business-class upstairs section offer more than six feet between seats.

"Our A380 flight is a game changer for New York," Korean Air's Americas Marketing V.P., John Jackson said in a statement prior to the inaugural flight. "We now offer service to Asia that no one else can meet. Our aircraft is roomier, quieter and more comfortable than any other serving the New York area."

"Our A380 is configured with fewer seats than any other airline to date and has passenger amenities not offered by any other carrier," Jackson added.

The Independent of London writes "the aircraft also holds three bars, all for premium passengers -- the Celestial bar, a cocktail lounge at the rear of the business class upper deck, another self-service bar at the front of the business-class deck, and a bar reserved for the use of first-class passengers only."

Korean Air hopes its A380s will help it make inroads in the lucrative market for trans-Pacific business travelers.

"We hope we can increase our corporate sales with the A380," Korean Air's Managing VP and Head of Passenger Business Division Keehong Woo is quoted as saying by Air Transport World (ATW).

"We put all business class in the upper deck. [The upper deck] looks like a business jet … We see that we can make more money [in business class] than in economy. We have more potential to develop business class … We think in the big markets, like LA and New York and big cities in Europe, we can fill up our [A380] business class," Woo adds, according to ATW.

Currently, Korean Air flies the A380 on routes from Seoul to Tokyo, Hong Kong and -- now -- New York. The carrier will begin A380 service between Seoul and Los Angeles this October.

The Sydney Morning Herald adds that "in an airline first, Korean Air has also put a duty free shop at the back of the plane, where passengers can browse actual items rather than be restricted to leafing through a brochure."

The Independent notes liquor, perfumes and the other items in the duty free section "are magnetized to ensure they don't fall off the shelves if the aircraft hits turbulence."

Austria: Eurofighter Typhoon on QRA interception training with new Lufthansa A380 “Wien”

Tuesday, 23. August 2011

On Monday the 22nd of August, after Vienna's Mayor Dr. Häupl christened the new Lufthansa A380 “Wien” at the hub of Austrian Airlines, two Austrian Eurofighters conducted a QRA training interception of the new Airbus on its flight through Austrian airspace. The Eurofighters, scrambling from their base in Zeltweg/Styria, intercepted and flew in formation with the A380.

Austrian Eurofighter pilot Major Günter Taschler said: “The challenge was how to approach the big wing span of the civil aircraft, in order to make eye contact with the pilot. It is also not that easy to approach the aircraft from below, since the airflow generated by the large surfaces of the aircraft can become difficult for the Eurofighter.”

This mission confirmed the excellent readiness of the Austrian Eurofighter fleet, always ready to provide the best air sovereignty in Austrian airspace.

Flying Air France A380 to Tokyo in October!

New plane, new air line and a new place for me!
I hope the legroom is bigger like claimed and that the plane actually is quiet. I have a hard time sleeping in planes.

You won´t have a problem to sleep in the A380.
My brother flew to Tokyo with a Lufthansa A380 and he said that it´s remarkably quiet compared to B747-400s and A330s from Lufthansa or Cathay Pacific which he used on other flights.
