China Southern puts A380 back into service
Updated: 2011-10-31 17:20
China Daily

China Southern Airlines' Airbus A380 superjumbo was cleared for operation Monday after being grounded for two days due to a mechanical fault, China National Radio's website (CNR.com) reported.

The carrier grounded its A380, the first and only one currently in service in China, for mechanical problems relating to flap power and the drive unit Saturday, just 12 days after beginning operation in the country.

The glitch was fixed Sunday night and the aircraft carried out the scheduled CZ3000 flight from Beijing to Guangzhou early Monday smoothly.

Since there are no spare parts in stock to fix the flap power drive unit glitches, China Southern had to transport them from its producer, the Germany-based Liebherr Group, which caused the grounding of the superjumbo.

"Since the flap power drive units are usually quite reliable, we do not stock backup parts, that is why we had to bring a new unit from a foreign country," Peng Jun, a senior China Southern party official told CNR.com.

"It is normal for a new aircraft to have glitches after being put into operation," Peng added.

Since being introduced in 2007, glitches have temporarily grounded A380s owned by various carriers several times without causing danger to passengers. Air France, Singapore Airlines and Qantas have all experienced groundings in the past.

The superjumbo has been involved in only one aviation incident in which a Qantas plane suffered an uncontained engine failure, forcing it to return to Singapore on Nov 4, 2010.

"The grounding of A380 doesn't mean it has safety issues, on the contrary, the quick finding of mechanical faults proves its reliability and safety, " Professor Li Xiaojin from Civil Aviation University of China told CNR.com.

"The key problems relating to safety have already been solved in test flights and the rest are needed to be improved gradually in daily operations to make everything perfect," said Li.

China Southern Airlines is the seventh operator of A380s globally following Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Air France, Lufthansa and Korean Air.

That is an amazing picture. Really great photography work. The curve in the wings of the A380 near the body joint is unique and imho a very beautiful sight to see.

Lufthansa A380 begins scheduled operations at Changi Airport
Oct 31, 2011 19:10 SGT

SINGAPORE, 31 October 2011 – Singapore Changi Airport today welcomes the commencement of Lufthansa’s A380 operations from Singapore to Frankfurt, the newest addition to Changi’s growing list of A380-connected destinations. With a total of 188 weekly A380 flights to nine major cities – Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo and Zurich – Changi Airport is the world’s busiest multi-carrier A380 hub.

Lufthansa[1] will operate the A380 aircraft on an existing Singapore-Frankfurt service. The daily flight departs Changi Airport at 2355 hours and arrives in Frankfurt at 0555 hours the following day. The return flight leaves Frankfurt at 2205 hours and arrives in Singapore at 1655 hours the next day. Lufthansa will operate the A380 at Changi Airport’s Terminal 2.

Mr Yam Kum Weng, Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice President, Air Hub Development, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Lufthansa’s A380 operations to Changi Airport. Just like Lufthansa’s launch of Changi’s inaugural service to Munich in 2008, this is another important milestone for us. The additional capacity that the new A380 service brings to the Singapore-Germany route will not only meet the strong travel demand but also help to stimulate traffic between the two markets.”

For the 12 months ended August 2011, 348,000 passengers travelled between Singapore and Germany, an increase of 18.3% over the previous corresponding period. At the same time, there were 2.37 million passengers who travelled between Singapore and Europe, a growth of 12.1%.

Eight airlines currently operate 340 weekly flights and 56,700 weekly one-way seats between Singapore and Europe. Lufthansa’s A380 will increase the capacity between Singapore and Germany by an additional 1,400 weekly one-way seats. This will be increased further when Singapore Airlines begins A380 operations on the Singapore-Frankfurt-New York route from 15 January 2012.

Another incident from A380 for Qantas.

Qantas A380 in mid-air engine mishap
Posted: 04 November 2011 0913 hrs

SYDNEY: Embattled Australian carrier Qantas Friday diverted one of its superjumbo A380 planes to Dubai after it developed an engine problem, a spokeswoman said.

Qantas flight 31 from Singapore to London was carrying 258 passengers, four pilots and 21 cabin crew when it was forced to change course. It landed in the United Arab Emirates early Friday.

"QF31 Singapore to London has diverted to Dubai this morning following an issue with the aircraft number four engine," the spokeswoman told AFP, adding there were no further details currently available.

"In line with standard operating procedures the engine was shut down and the aircraft is expected to land without further incident."

Qantas, which on Saturday shut down its entire fleet as part of an industrial fight with unions, previously grounded its Airbus A380 planes after one experienced a mid-air engine explosion after take off from Singapore.

The carrier grounded its six A380s for intensive safety checks after the November 4, 2010 blast sent shards of metal raining down on an Indonesian island and punched a hole in the wing of the aircraft.

Qantas resumed limited A380 flights to London in late November 2010, but refused to relaunch A380 flights on the trans-Pacific route to Los Angeles until all concerns over its Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines had been resolved.

The airline reached a $100 million settlement with engine maker Rolls-Royce over the incident.

Air France will launch an A380 service to.... Dubai, everyday from the second of December.
It will be interesting to see if AF can compete with Emirates.

Hong Kong Airlines was rumoured to have wanted to order some, but the order never went through. I recall seeing a photo that the HX logo was white-ed out from a demo A380.

Very recently rumours have come back that an HX order may be imminent.

And here is another one from the ground with an AWESOME end!

The easyjet A319 crew must have been very much surprised to see this whale passing them by!
