Saw this plane for the first time in LA last week. If this makes sense, it's so big it doesn't look big. We taxi'd past one and I thought, hmm, not so big. Then as we continued past I noted the 747 parked next to it. Then I said, Holy........

Thai Airways’ second A380 (MSN093) has been confirmed as the new frame being carried on Convoy #03/2012.

Only the wings and tailplane are being carried in the convoy, with the remaining components scheduled to arrive later this month.

Once delivered, she will carry registration HS-TUB.

Thai Airways’ first A380 (MSN087) has now completed final assembly, and is expected to perform engine tests within the next month.

After spending two hours in the air testing her systems and hardware, she set course for Hamburg, arriving early in the evening.

2012 is about Thai and Malaysia (and a prince in SA) receiving their first A380 right ?

I would love some other airlines to receive their first this year too (like BA) but well, it's going great anyway.

Which destinations will they serve from BKK and KUL ?

Yesterday, the first A380 for a private customer (MSN002) began testing her electrical systems.

We expect MSN002 to begin engine and taxi tests next week.

Cracks put Qantas A380 out of action
Matt O'Sullivan
February 8, 2012
Sydney Morning Herald

QANTAS has taken one of its flagship A380 aircraft out of service for up to a week after engineers discovered 36 hairline cracks in its wings during detailed inspections.

The airline stressed last night that the cracks - none longer than about two centimetres - were not as serious as those discovered by the manufacturer, Airbus, last month that prompted European regulators to order urgent inspections of almost a third of the worldwide fleet within six weeks.

Qantas has discovered cracks in the two double-deck A380s it has so far inspected.

The latest ones were found during routine checks of the A380 - named Charles Kingsford Smith - after it hit severe turbulence above India on a flight from London to Singapore on January 7.

The engineers found a total 36 hairline cracks in the wing-rib feet of the A380. Each wing has about 2000 wing-rib feet, which attach the skins of the wings to brackets.

Qantas said last night that the cracks found in the Charles Kingsford-Smith were not related to the turbulence or specific to the airline but had been traced to a manufacturing issue at Airbus.

"This type of cracking is different from the 'type two' cracking found on certain A380s in the global fleet, which is now the subject of a European airworthiness directive,'' a spokesman said. ''To date, type-two cracking has not been found on Qantas aircraft.''

Airbus has repeatedly said that the A380s are safe to fly despite the cracks.

Qantas has had the A380 parked at its Mascot jet base since Sunday while it has detailed inspections of the inside of its wings. The airline's engineers were awaiting further advice from Airbus overnight about whether more inspections would be required.

Since the Herald revealed that cracks had been discovered in the A380s, Airbus has found the more serious ''type two'' cracks around the central part of the wing. It prompted European regulators to order 20 A380s worldwide to be inspected within six weeks.

Qantas’s A380s are not currently included in the airworthiness directive because they have not accumulated the same number of flight cycles as aircraft operated by other airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

Airbus has said it is working on a two-step fix of the cracked wing brackets on its aircraft.
