For how many years now has Cathay been considering the A380 or the 747-8?

It would be nice if they could make their minds up for a change but I wouldn't be surprised if the 1st half of 2013 will pass by without an order.

Would seem every A380 operator is following the leader... Pretty much every carrier operate their flag ship to HKG with the exception of LH...

All I remember is that LH has been operating B744s on its FRA-HKG route for a long time, with no plans to swap it for an A380. Give it more time, though... it can come.

Now that would be a big question... how many A380 gates does HKG have? I just hope that with the upcoming airport in Manila (yes, it may still be rumors, but construction will start soon), it will have at least five A380 gates to start with. I still have questions, though, if Philippine Airlines is keenly interested in buying A380s to replace its current B744s.

HKIA has a total of two parking stands and four air bridges that can accommodate the A380 and offer direct access to the superjumbo’s upper deck. During the year, we started upgrading a third stand. When work is completed in mid-2010, this stand will have three air bridges.

I was told the maiden flight of BA's first A380 would be LHR-HKG, correct me if I'm wrong.

British Airways is lining up its first A380 service to Hong Kong next winter.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai last night, to mark the carrier's 80th anniversary flying to the Middle East, Chairman Sir Martin Broughton said: "It's not confirmed but my guess is it would be Hong Kong, although Madrid will probably be the test flight."

CX is extremely conservative in opeing new routes and buying new type of aircraft, but that's also why they can make big profit.

For the Asian airlines like SQ, KE, TG or MH, the daily flight to HKG is a way to maximise the use of their A380. Otherwise, she would remain idle during the day between the arrival from Europe in the early morning and the departure back to Europe in the late evening.

Makes sense given they haven't reinstated their 3rd daily service to Hong Kong yet, and Heathrow slots are so valuable.
