Before Airbus producing A380, their super jumbo concept plane was A2000. I've seen the model of this aircraft in an aviation magazine in 1991. And compared to A380, A2000 looks better.
But somehow, Airbus eventually went ahead with A380 instead of A2000. In my opinion, A2000 looks more beautiful when compared to A380. (if I have time, I'd scan the image of A2000 model).

I wonder what was the reason behind that decision?

I'm sure the decision came down to aerodynamics & not looks...
Let's not forget the A388 is the shorten version with a designed wing span for the stretched A389 in mind...

Indeed, the reason is that aircrafts production is not a fashion show!
Customers don't really care about the look, what they look at is purchase price, fuel consumption, operating cost, etc...

I'm still in my office now. Hopefully I could find the magazine once I returned back home.

A2000 share many things in common with A380, such as:
-full double decker
-four engines

The difference is, A2000 nose is more streamlined than A380.

Women's Day marked with all-female superjumbo crew
AFP
7 March 2012

Air France will mark International Women's Day on Friday with a 100 percent female crew on board an Airbus 380, the world's largest commercial airplane, for a flight from Paris to Washington.

"Air France is bringing together the largest exclusively female crew in its history: two pilots and 22 stewardesses" for the flight, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Air France has organised all-female crews to mark International Women's Day, celebrated every year on March 8, since 2006 but this year will be the first time on an A380 superjumbo, which can carry up to 516 passengers.

"Seeing an all-female crew makes an impression. I'm very excited about the idea of this flight," said Christine Heitz, who will pilot the flight.

This is it! This is the model of Airbus A2000, which was shown during Paris Airshow in 1991. It was the predecessor of A380 (nee A3XX) concept. There several notable difference between this aircraft and A380.

One of the most obvious difference is A2000 has a more streamlined nose when compared to A380. And it looks prettier too.

It looks similar, but it'd have been a lot bigger too. The lower deck is a 12 abreast Economy, and with more network carriers creating new hubs in every nook and cranny (particularly throughout Asia), the need for a very large aircraft has been greatly diminished. Just look at Northeast Asia, just 10 years ago, the only major hubs were Tokyo and Hong Kong. Today, we have those in addition to Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Qantas is flying the A380 to Dubai and then passengers will connect to Emirates for the rest of the journey.

Qantas will compliment the 5 x EK A380 daily LHR services... In total there will be 7 daily QF/EK A380 services into LHR as of the 31st of March...

Even though the nose is more streamlined its not a conventional design for manoeuvring the aircraft on the ground... The cockpit / nose was centred to give pilots a clearer view of the ground without the need for cameras...

Honestly, I'd prefer the looks of A2000 instead of A380. The A380 is just...ugly... A stark contrast when compared to previous Airbus aircraft, whose are look elegant.

I must agree 100%. The old concept also reminds me of the MD12 idea that never happened because of MD's bankruptcy.

from what i'm reading it looks like there was a (brief) partnership between Airbus and Boeing to develop bigger planes which they called Very Large Commercial Transport (VLCT)... i'm not sure though if the A2000 is the product of that consortium or an entirely different project altogether... details on these planes seem very few when you google them...

But A2000 and MD-12 were at conceptual desing stage, so, you dont know if would be ugly as well, an aircraft of that size souldnt be beauty, i think we will get used to she with the time.
