Be careful though, the Airbus/Boeing duopoly could really be threatened in the upcoming years by new competitors.

The Brazilian Embraer, the Canadian Bombardier and the Chinese Comac all have projects of new single-aisle planes to compete with the A320/B737. If any of those 3 achieve a real success in their project they could work on bigger planes later.

This being said, they wouldn't come with a VLA project anytime soon... so the A380 will probably have little competition in that market for at least the next 20 years.

Yes indeed Momo1425 is smart and well informed, but this time what he wrote is just simply lame, old, common sense.

Didn't they shelve those plans.

It would also highlight China Southern's failure to utilize the A380 properly, I doubt that they would allow a direct competitor to benefit from their own problematic start with the superjumbo. Hopefully they can make it work on the Beijing - Sydney route, they have been using it on just domestic flight for which it's not configured for way too long now.

It's not going to happen. Air China wanted those 2 A380s on dry lease while China Southern would only give them on wet lease.

A380 pre-assembly in Hamburg. We can see a part of Etihad's first A380 (MSN166) on the left side.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to the MSN 002 to 004, the three planes used for certification testing and was eventually supposed to go to Etihad Airlines, if I remember reading correctly?

Etihad won't take these in the end, they will get new ones instead.

MSN 001 - A380 promotional airplane, will stay at Airbus

MSN 002 - Was in storage for a long time, is now being modified for a VIP costumer, probably Kingdom Holdings since that is the only VIP order on the books.

MSN 004 - This one was active as a testbed for the A350 program, should be modified and sold to a VIP costumer if Airbus finds a customer.

Your explanation on the MSN 001 is for the MSN 004 and MSN 004, again is for MSN 001, MSN 002 is right.

Correct.

Airbus usually keeps 1 test aircraft in the fleet, they still have an A343 and A346 for example. But in case of the A380, they will keep the promotional airplane too.

MSN2 is still in storage, it was sold to Kingdom Holding but the prince re-sold it later and the new owner will pick it up when there is an outfit location available. It takes years to outfit a VIP airplane so the queue is very long.
