Lufthansa has cancelled 3 A380s in September, bringing down their total A380s on order from 17 to 14 with 4 still to be delivered.

http://www.airbus.com/company/market/orders-deliveries/

With this cancellation the total orders for the A380 now stands at 259.

Love this sight already. AKL is so lucky to have three EK A380s at once. The only down side I feel for immigration or does Australia and New Zealand have a preclearance deal for immigration like the USA has with certain countries.

Airbus has unfilled A380 production slots in 2015

(Reuters) - Airbus has a "couple" of A380 superjumbo production slots available for existing customers at the end of 2015, its sales chief said on Tuesday.

The aircraft would not be available for new customers because of the customization needed for a new layout of its double-decker cabins.

"If you are a new customer I do not have anything available in 2015; if you're an existing customer who doesn't want to have his spec changed I could get you a couple of slots at the end of 2015," John Leahy told a news conference.

Passenger aircraft are usually sold years ahead of delivery but a slack period of sales of the world's largest passenger jet has left unusual gaps in production. Leahy said, however, that he was confident about long-term demand for the 525-seat jet.

He also said he planned to make a product announcement and "commercial announcements" indicating new orders at an air show in Beijing on Wednesday, but declined to give further details.

(Reporting by Tim Hepher; Editing by James Regan)

------------

Is it concerning that a brand new program such as the A380 has empty slots already?

Nah for China Southern. They are having trouble finding routes that they can make money off of the A380. They are suppose to be flying CAN-SYD-CAN route soon. They have CAN-LAX-CAN. They have a couple of domestic routes that aren't proving to be making any money. Maybe a couple more to possible open up PEK/CAN-LHR or some European routes or to JFK. China Eastern could order some to compete with the airlines at PVG. Since PVG is China Eastern main international hub. They now have to compete with EK, AF, and LH's A380s now. Air China to relive some smaller planes due to capacity issues at PEK. I am still hoping maybe a new airline in the americans will order some day. Big hopes I know that wont happen.

Look at the 747-8I/F program. Less orders total than the A380.

This was already in the news earlier this year, but the Lufthansa cancellations might have opened up another slot making it relevant again.

Air France also recently said in public that the A380 is not a good fit for their network, don't expect anything from them. It's more likely that they will also cancel the last 2 or 3 they still have on order.

There were no orders at the Beijing Airshow, so don't expect anything from China anytime soon. Based on the experience of China Southern it was also not really likely that we should see anything. Even though it was partly due to the Chinese government that China Southern has not yet found the right spot for the A380 in their fleet it's still not encouraging for other Chinese airlines to take the gamble and order the planes.

It's now a matter of when Doric will firm their order that was announced at the Paris Airshow and on the Dubai Airshow to see if there are any top-up orders from the Gulf carriers. Otherwise 2013 will turn out into a very sour year for the A380 program.

the article says the slots would only be available for existing customers, not for new ones.

The 747-8 program currently has 4 open delivery slots only 9 months away.

Wall Street Journal's article on the sale of A350 to JAL:

Quote:
Next year, Skymark expects to receive its two-deck superjumbos, which can carry more than 800 passengers. If Skymark can operate the A380 profitably, it will put new pressure on JAL and ANA to examine the superjumbo.

Not long ago, JAL flew a high-density version of the Boeing 747 jumbo that could carry more than 600 passengers on domestic flights. Boeing is now marketing a new version of its jumbo, the 747-8, which is larger, and almost as big as the A380.

After announcing the Airbus order Monday, JAL President Yoshiharu Ueki—a former pilot who flew 747s—declined to say whether he plans to buy A380s. But he said that the A350s JAL ordered and the superjumbo are almost identical to fly because of the way Airbus designs them.
A380 for JAL?

Yah and ANA will order 90 747-8Is. Not in a million years. They would need a new livery for the A380. There current one sucks on a 777.
