Is having 500 some odd passengers per flight a great idea: YES

but is it realistic to fill all those seats per flight: No it is not
I think another problem with the A380 is that it is very old tech. Wings look like they're from 1980, and a metal fuselage. If the same plane had new and much wider wings and a composite body and also new engines, it's economics would obliterate all competition. It was pretty much the last old-tech plane, followed by the likes of A350, B787 (which, I know isn't its competition) and then the upcoming 777X (which can supposedly hold its own against CFRP planes).

The wings are actually extremely high-tech in terms of their shape. They have a different cross-section, chord, twist, etc, all along the length of the span to fully optimise the lifting capabilities of the wing while minimising drag and weight. It is nothing like wings from the 1980s and I doubt we would have had the computational power to design a wing like that 30-40 years ago.

The optimal width for the wing is wider than how they are, but airport infrastructure put a constraint on how wide they could make it. No point having minimum possible fuel burn from the aircraft if there's only 6 airports in the world with gate and taxiway clearance large enough to handle it.

what the person was trying to say was:

If the A380 did its homework, had a composite carbon fiber body, better engines, and more fuel efficient materials the A380 could be the beast of the sky and easily beat out of the 777X and 747-8i.

The problem with the A380 is that it was most likely designed a good 8-10 years ago. The carbon fiber composite materials werent yet available and the engines they were looking to use didnt exist at the time this plane was being developed. They built the plane with what technology they had at the time.

And they did a good dam job given the circumstance of what the aviation industry has gone through the last 10 years. The continuation of the 9/11 fall out, world recession, and fuel spike just to name a few.

Yeah i completely agree. Airbus did well for what they had to work with. The SAD part is, IF airbus waited 5 years give or take, they couldve had one of the best planes ever created.

I think Boeing was ahead of the curve though. The 787 changed the way all Boeing planes are made today. The technology used in the wings, carbon fiber, and a few other "firsts" for that plane. They implement that same technology with all there planes. the Boeing 777X is going to compete with the A380 big time.

Just saw on Saudia's Wikipedia page under fleet and it has them ordering 30 A380s for 747 replacements. Thought that was kind of funny.
