Heathrow Defies Capacity Cap as A380 Aids Passenger Increase

By Kari Lundgren Jan 13, 2014 9:12 AM ET

London’s Heathrow airport, which has operated close to capacity since the start of the decade, added 2.4 million passengers last year as airlines eked out seats by operating bigger planes including the Airbus A380.

Europe’s busiest hub attracted 72.3 million travelers in 2013, up 3.4 percent on 2012’s 69.9 million, even as the number of flights stagnated, according to a statement today. Seats per aircraft increased by 2.8 percent on average.

Heathrow is fighting for the opportunity to build a third runway after being limited by the flight capacity of its two existing strips. Carriers have responded by boosting the average size of jets there, led by a surge in A380 operations that have made the airport the third-busiest in the world for the superjumbo, according to Airbus, up from fourth in 2012.

“Our passenger figures reflect the growing demand for the long-haul destinations only a hub airport can support,” Heathrow Chief Executive Officer Colin Matthews said in the statement, while adding that the U.K. site will still lose its European lead without the addition of at least one new runway.

The number of flights to and from Heathrow fell 0.4 percent year-on-year to 469,552 in 2013. The average number of passengers per jet gained 3.7 percent to 154.8 as British Airways, the airport’s biggest user, introduced its first A380 services, adding to superjumbo operations by carriers including Dubai-based Emirates and Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN) of Australia.

Alliance for Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has entered into a new alliance with Air New Zealand that the airlines said could eventually boost their capacity between New Zealand and Singapore by 30%.

Under the agreement, Singapore Airlines plans to fly a daily A380 service between Singapore and Auckland, replacing its existing daily service operated by a B777-300ER.

Air New Zealand plans to operate a daily B777-200ER service to Singapore from as early as December 2014, taking over five flights currently operated by Singapore Airlines and adding two more weekly flights, increasing the frequency to daily.

The deal also includes a codeshare agreement that would allow Air New Zealand passengers to travel on codeshare flights with Singapore Airlines to destinations in South East Asia, Europe and Africa.

Singapore Airlines said in a statement the move was an example of its commitment to the south-west Pacific market.

"This is a genuine win-win partnership, enabling Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand to work together to provide more frequency and enhanced travel options to our customers," Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong said.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler welcomed the announcement.

“Singapore itself is an important and growing visitor market for New Zealand, with arrival numbers up by 13% in the past year. But Singapore is also vital hub for Asia.

“There is a lot of airline capacity into Singapore from Europe and across Asia, but until now there has been a lack of onward capacity between Singapore and New Zealand, affecting our ability to grow visitors through Singapore,” he said.

“This has been a handbrake on the opportunity to grow visitor numbers from South and Southeast Asia. This announcement is a real boost for our new investments in emerging markets like India and Indonesia, with a lot more capacity and great connections from multiple cities right across Asia.”

Flying Emirates A380 BCN - DWX - best economy seats

Buenos dias. I am planning to take a flight from Barcelona to Dubai International with the A380 this summer on my way to Japan. Any seats that are good to get in economy? Close to the toilets no or yes, window is a must or no because of the camera view etc. Seeing I am a reluctant flyer but happy traveler (I hate sitting in the back of a car, imagine in a plane without being able to look over the shoulder of the pilot), I obviously would want to be close to an exit and I am not planning to drug myself for this particular flight so want to have the best possible experience. Any suggestions from people that flew Emirates A380 economy?

If this image is anything to go by then I must say its going to be the sleekest looking A380 scheme!

The airline still exists on paper and there are still plans for a restart, but the chance that the airline will take off again is very small. But even if that happens it would not be taken delivery of the A380s, therefor Airbus scrapped both their A380 and A350 orders.

With the Emirates order that was also booked in December and the Lufthansa cancellation earlier this year the net order total for the A380 is 42. The best year in orders since the 2001, the year it was launched.

The order from leasing company Doric that was announced at the Paris Airshow to be firmed up later in the year didn't yet materialize. If it doesn't happen this year it will become one of those A380 orders that never happened.
What is it about the airline industry that makes this sort of cancellation normal? I mean, I would think that at the time of the announcement the parties already know the different factors affecting the purchase, or they wouldn't make the announcement... What is it that they win by making the announcement without being sure?

At the press conference on Monday, John Leahy said the Doric order is still happening and should be firmed this spring.

Apparently Airbus have deliberated delayed it into 2014 to more evenly spread the orders.

In other words, Airbus doesn't expect any other completely new major order for the A380 this year.
