Talk about a last minute cancellation.

Quote:
Airbus Said to Drop Skymark’s A380 Order on Cash Shortage

Airbus Group (AIR) NV has agreed to drop an order for six A380 superjumbos by Japanese low-cost airline Skymark Airlines Inc. (9204), said people familiar with the decision, in a blow to a program that’s struggled to keep customers.

Skymark can no longer afford the aircraft, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions remain private. Negotiations between the two sides continue about compensation, and options range from delaying delivery to outright cancellation, another person close to the talks said.

The only Japanese airline to order the double-decker model, Skymark initially signed a firm contract for four A380s in 2011, and later came back for two more.

Now that's a true blow to the A380 program, understand the order was for 6 x A380's.
I always questioned this order for airline which never operated long haul and now my concerns have become a reality.

It clearly shows that the A380 is not an airplane for a small airline that want's to start something big.

The biggest for Airbus now is to find new customers for the 2 A380 that already built for Skymark. It depends on how far they are already customized if that's going to be easy or not.

If it were me, I would recommend Skymark to get the A330 (as it is doing now) and keep earning more money until it has the monetary capacity to buy the A380. And by the way, is there financing available so that the airline can pay for its purchase through installments or through special deals? I mean, that fallout seems to be quite bad...

It looks like the relationship between Skymark and Airbus has turned pretty sour.

"The European plane maker is demanding that the cash-strapped carrier join a bigger airline group as a condition for making any changes in the order leading to a stalemate in negotiations, Skymark said in a statement Tuesday. Should Skymark refuse to comply, Airbus is requesting an "exorbitant" cancellation fee "beyond the realm of common sense," Japan's third-largest carrier said."

online.wsj.com/articles/skymark-in-talks-to-cancel-airbus-order-1406603497

Even though it's Skymark that gambled and lost with this order which does mean that they should take the loss. But it's also Airbus own responsibility to know who they are selling their planes to, especially with the A380 which is not an airplane for every airline. I guess they were also blinded by the troubles surrounding the A380 project that they are selling the plane to everyone without even caring if they will actually deliver the planes. And with several failed smaller orders it's also going to impact the financing of the A380s. Not so much for the established airlines, but why would a bank even consider to invest in an A380 order from any other small airline. Making it even harder for any new attempts by other smaller airlines. Something that will also affect the Amedeo order, they will have to find big customers otherwise they will simply not get the financial backing to pay for these planes. Good chance that the 20 A380s will just end up with Emirates. It will be a good deal for Amedeo, but it wasn't what they intended with this highly speculative order.

The order is now officially cancelled, Airbus confirms this in a press release.

Quote:
Airbus terminates purchase order with Skymark Airlines for A380s

29 JULY 2014 PRESS RELEASE

Following discussions with Skymark Airlines and in light of the airline’s expressed intentions in respect of the A380, Airbus has in accordance with its contractual rights, notified Skymark Airlines that the purchase order for the six A380s signed in 2011 has been terminated. Airbus is reserving all its rights and remedies.
http://www.airbus.com/no_cache/newse...nes-for-a380s/

Skymarks press release (in Japanese) still talked about negotiations on the terms of the order and the cancellation. Airbus now goes 1 step beyond and has terminated the order in accordance with it's contractual rights. This means that in the end Airbus has cancelled the order, not Skymark. Which is quite unusual in these kind of situations and it shows that the relationship between the 2 companies must now be subzero. I wonder how this will effect Skymarks order for the A330, they still have a couple to be delivered. If Skymark will still take those these will be deliveries without any festivities.

This one was bound to happen. I am surprised it took so long. A narrowbody LCC buying A380s made no sense. That too in a super conservative country like Japan.

I can think of 1 airline which can buy the 2 A380s of Skymark. Philippine Airlines. It is in the midst of a massive refleeting program with 100 new jets, they have ordered 65 Airbus planes (most are narrowbodied Airbus planes, with 10 A330 HGWs). They haven't ordered the remaining 35 jets yet. The airline is planning to expand in the U.S. and Europe, and recently they were back in the black.

Correct but surely the engines can be converted over to EA power plants.

It seems that this Air France A380 borrowed a part from Malaysian Airlines as a replacement for the original panel. Behind it is the emergency slide for this door.

Any better suggestions? I'm sure the option of switching power plants outweighs 2 x A380 frames worth $600 million exposed to rain, hail and shine.
