Time for a dose of reality:

Giant Airbus A380 finds sales not so big

Quote:
The A380 has a list price of $400 million, but Airbus has cut prices as much as 50 percent. So far, Airbus has received 318 orders and delivered 138 planes to just 11 airlines — a disappointing tally given forecasts that the plane would be a flagship aircraft for carriers worldwide.
Any indications that things will start to turn around for this aircraft?

Nope not yet.

As has been pointed out, the design philosophies between joining megahubs with an A380 vs hub-busting with a 787 are both valid.

Except with an A380, you have to modify airports and it's not exactly fuel-efficient unless you can fill it up with people (can't even be used as a decent freighter). The problem is that finding paying passengers has been difficult for airlines since the GFC - there are many routes between large hubs for which the A380 is still a bit too big.

It's an amazingly engineered aircraft to be sure. But a one trick pony for airlines, and not a trick which is particularly flexible either - you need to find 450+ passengers every time you fly the plane or you will lose money. So it's no surprise airlines aren't rushing to buy more (Emirates excluded).

Ive said this a couple times:

1) Boeing was ahead of the curve and reading the market with the 787

2) The A380 needs a NEO version BADLY. Right now its a fat pig that needs some updating.

3) best premium passenger experience in the sky…asia hubing to europe via middle east…

A380 is a no brainer. 787 of little interest over 7 hours.

Which is no good to any airline unless there are premium passengers who have money to spend on premium travel classes.

Airlines are in the business of making money first and designing wonderful cabins second. Much like aircraft manufacturers who are in the business to make money, not aeroplanes - I imagine the A380 will be the last quad engine commercial aircraft ever designed.

A sobering thought, but most likely true!

The Asiana livery looks a bit awkward on the 380.
