It was a totally different commercial environment though. Jet fuel was practically cheaper than water and airlines were regulated reducing competition and increasing airfares.

Today those two factors conspire to diminish any incremental benefit the A380 has over the 747 or 777, thereby reducing the case for modifying airports at great expense.

Well, the majority of international hubs are already modified. Its not like anyone plans to use the A380 on regional airports.
