Morocco Says Airbus A380 Could Replace Boeing 747 on Hajj Trips

By Deena Kamel Yousef
Nov 18, 2014 11:21 AM ET

Quote:
Morocco’s national carrier said the Airbus Group NV (AIR) superjumbo is in the running to replace its sole Boeing Co. (BA) 747, opening up the possibility of the A380’s first order based around flights for the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage.

Royal Air Maroc will issue an invitation to tender for the deal in the next three months, with the A380 likely to compete with the latest 747-8 version of the original Boeing jumbo, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Habiba Laklalech said today.

The aircraft eventually chosen will fulfill multiple roles, acting on occasion as a transport for the Moroccan Royal Family when not engaged in regular flights or shuttling visitors to Mecca, Laklalech said in an interview in Dubai.

Korean Air has won the A380 ‘Top Operational Excellence’ award

SEOUL, Korea (21 November, 2014) – Korean Air has been selected as the best A380 operator in the world by the aircraft’s manufacturer Airbus.

Korean Air received the A380 ‘Top Operational Excellence’ award for the second time at the Airbus Technical Symposium, which was held in Bangkok on 19 November.

Airbus Technical Symposiums are held every two years for each aircraft type and the ‘Top Operational Excellence’ awards are considered the most prestigious for operators of Airbus aircraft. The winners are determined by a thorough evaluation of the overall performance of the shortlisted airlines, including the operational reliability (also known as on-time operation rate) and aircraft utilization.

Korean Air acquired its first A380 in June 2011 and was the first airline in Korea to operate the aircraft and the airline has recorded an impressive operational reliability of 99.7%, meaning only 0.3% of flights were delayed or cancelled between October 2012 and September 2014.

The operational reliability is an international index that measures the accuracy of flight operations due to delays or defects, by the calculation of flights operated within 15 minutes from STD (scheduled time of departure). A higher measurement verifies the better operating capability of the airline and reflects the priority given to maintenance and safety management.

Configured in a three class layout with just 407 seats, the lowest configuration of any A380 operator so far, Korean Air’s double-decker A380s feature unique amenities with 12 First Class Kosmo Suites and 301 Economy Class seats on the lower deck and 94 fully lie-flat Prestige Sleeper seats in Prestige Class (business class) on the upper deck. Its ultra-luxurious and unique in-flight facilities, such as the world’s first ‘Duty Free Showcase’ and the three bars and lounges, offer an innovative and highly enjoyable in-flight experience.

Korean Air now operates a total of 155 aircraft including 10 A380s on the long-haul flights including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Paris.

And speaking of the A380...

Emirates has successfully overhauled its first-ever A380

With the registration A6-EDA, Emirates took it out of service for a total of 55 days for a 3C Check, meaning the entire cabin area has been overhauled and replaced worn-out, vital parts to make it operable like new again.

Quote:
Emirates Engineering has completed a 3C check, the largest maintenance check on any aircraft, on the first A380 delivered to Emirates Airline. The Dubai-based carrier received the A380 (registration EDA-Echo Delta Alpha) in June 2008.

Emirates said in a statement the major overhaul has restored the carrier’s first A380 to near pristine condition. In a round-the-clock operation, which took 55 days, two teams of highly specialized engineers stripped the entire interior of the double-decker aircraft to the bare metal hull, inspected and overhauled every single part, and then reassembled the components.

Yes it is, but, in this case, the aircraft is way too large to perform a complete a D check (typically, for smaller aircraft, it lasts the same amount of time as what A6-EDA went through). However, with a delivery date of 29 July 2008 (over six years old), I suspect that it would have been more appropriate to be called a D check (unless, of course, other components were not checked during the inspection). The D check could happen in around 2 to 3 years' time, though...

There is no such thing as a D-check on A380. Activities normally done during D-checks are spread in C-checks (1/3 of activities every C-check so each activity is done once every 3 C-checks).
This is also why C-checks on A 380 are called 1C-check, 2C-check and 3C-check, they are not exactly the same as they incorporate specific activities.

Aside of Emirates, which airline uses GP Alliance engines for their A380?
