Etihad Airways’ A380 delivery continues the momentum for Airbus’ 21st century flagship jetliner

18 December 2014 Headline news

The number “13” was a source of great pride and celebration today as Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways became the 13th carrier to date to receive an Airbus A380 jetliner – which is setting new operational benchmarks in reliable service around the globe.

Airbus employees celebrate in Hamburg the handover of the first A380 to Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which becomes the 13th customer overall.

This milestone handover – the 150th by Airbus overall, which also marks the third such initial delivery to an A380 customer in 2014 – is yet another achievement in the strong relationship between the United Arab Emirates’ flag carrier and Airbus.

Etihad Airways began operations in 2003, and in 2013 transported approximately 11.5 million passengers. Currently, the carrier flies to 108 existing or announced passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

The Etihad Airways fleet incorporated 75 Airbus aircraft as of early December 2014 – consisting of 28 single-aisle A320 Family jetliners, 34 A330s and 11 A340s – which will be joined by an additional 115 Airbus-built aircraft on order. The total includes 62 A350 XWBs, making Etihad Airways the third-largest customer for this new-generation Airbus widebody jetliner in terms of order volume. In addition Etihad Airways was launch customer for the A330-200F freighter, further reinforcing its strong ties with Airbus.

With its milestone A380 aircraft now delivered, Etihad’s first A380 will make its debut on the popular London Heathrow route from Abu Dhabi International Airport, in December. By the end of 2015, Etihad Airways will have five A380s in operation, with plan to introduce the aircraft on the airlines’ Sydney and New York JFK routes.

This will expand the A380 network, which in early December included 94 routes to 44 destinations, flown by the aircraft currently operated by 12 customers.

Taking off or landing every four minutes on average around the globe, the A380 has become a true world traveller since its 2007 commercial service entry, with the combined fleet flying more than 75 million passengers. The global fleet has performed over 1.7 million total flight hours with an average daily utilisation exceeding 13 hours per aircraft.

These impressive figures have established the aircraft’s reputation as the “queen of the skies,” backed by the A380’s unique ability to capture traffic growth, offer superior levels of comfort to passengers in all classes of service and its efficient operating economics.

The A380 doesn't have a momentum, so how can a delivery continue it. Airbus clearly still in damage control mode, this delivery is still completely overshadowed by last weeks disastrous investor days.

Which is reflected in this kind of headlines.

Etihad rules out further Airbus A380 purchases

Etihad Airways has revealed it does not plan more A380 purchases in a blow for the manufacturer Airbus as it ponders the future of its US$25 billion superjumbo programme.

The Abu Dhabi carrier’s chief executive said yesterday that a halt in the production of the world’s biggest passenger plane will not affect its strategy, as it does not plan to take more than it already has on order from the European manufacturer.

“When you are taking 10 aircraft, then whether Airbus continues the production line or not isn’t an issue,” said James Hogan, the Etihad president and chief executive, at an Abu Dhabi airport event yesterday to showcase Etihad’s first A380 and Boeing 787.

Mr Hogan’s remarks add weight to comments last week from Airbus that there is a lack of new buyers for the superjumbo, raising the possibility of ending production of its flagship plane.

Such statements from the ME3 airlines should be taken with a grain of salt, they are known to make such downplaying statements only to place new big orders soon afterwards. But in the light of the recent discussion around the A380 project it would not be great timing if these remarks are indeed only a twist.

Kinda like when football club management sends out a press release stating that it has 100% confidence in the coach.

Does Etihad even have the route system for a mega fleet of A380s like Emirates have?

They don't, that's why they only ordered 10. And if they would order more it wouldn't even come close to the numbers Emirates has ordered.

Etihad have churned out a game changer with their A380 and B787 interiors. Amazing.

Will Etihad do a bacon sandwich for that price? I didn't think so.

tullamarine I don't think Etihad (or Emirates for that matter) will do a bacon sandwich at any price!!! Qantas customers on Sydney/Melbourne-London lost bacon from the breakfast menu following the Emirates alliance.

BaconButty I finally understand the true horrors of globalization.

Airbus will not scrap A380s despite order drought: CEO
Quote:
Toulouse (France) (AFP) - The head of Airbus said Monday the aircraft manufacturer had no intention to stop making the A380, saying the super jumbo had a "bright future" despite a lack of orders this year.

The idea of stopping production of the A380 is "just crazy", Fabrice Bregier said as Qatar took delivery of the first of Airbus's next-generation long-haul A350-900 aircraft.

Bregier admitted however: "Clearly our challenge is to get more customers", while insisting that the Airbus order book was "largely filled".

The remarks came after an official at parent company Airbus Group suggested that the A380 would be wound down by 2018 because of a lack of orders.

The comment caused Airbus shares to nosedive on December 10 and 11, losing nearly 15 percent of their value.

Airbus, which aimed to sell 30 A380s and deliver the same number this year, met the delivery goal but not the sales target.

Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier poses near one of the two Airbus A350-900 aircrafts for the Qatar Airways …
The CEO said the trend was towards bigger planes like the A380 because global air traffic is expected to double every 15 years.

"The A380 has a bright future as the market is getting bigger," Bregier said.

He said one option for making the plane more attractive was to replace the engines with more fuel-efficient ones such as those used in the mid-range A320neo (new engine option) and long-haul A330neo.

Meanwhile the head of Qatar Airways, Akbar al Baker, said the airline might buy more than the 14 A380s it has already ordered, of which three have been delivered.

"Qatar Airways is very satisfied with this airplane. And I don't know what more Airbus can do... It's a very well defined aircraft," he said.

I read that too today ...... he did that to save Airbuses stock from falling even more. The reality of the situation is: No one is buying the A380 ...... even if they invest in the NEO. Besides Emirates ....who is buying this plane?

Airbus has reportedly initiated legal proceedings against Skymark Airlines in the UK over the cancelled $2bn contract for six A380 superjumbo aircraft earlier this year. Skymark signed the order for the aircraft in 2011, but due to poor finances the Japanese company asked to modifiy the contract and delay purchase, according to Japan News.

The price of the Airbus stock has not recovered since the drop that was caused by the remarks of the CFO. So it seems that the investors are now also very critical about any new remarks by Airbus about the A380.

I understand the price of Airbus was effected by the announcement. No doubt about it but this particular "user" is anti Airbus and uses every opportunity to criticise the European manufacture!

I believe the person you refer to thinks only America has or does make good aircraft.
If that is his belief, he certainly comes across like that sometimes, then he is so far wide of the mark its embarrassing.
Boeing are a great manufacturer but so are Airbus.
