There's no mention of the A380neo in the articles, but this does suggest that Airbus will go ahead with it. It could actually turn out to be mainly an engine upgrade without too many other changes to the Airplane. Rolls Royce will be paying a large part of the development costs, making it a relatively cheap upgrade for Airbus. A launch could even be expected later this year, either at the Paris airshow this summer or the Dubai Airshow at the end of the year.

But, Airbus still needs to find more customers if they don't want to turn the program into a loss again. But then again, if they keep on making money on the A320, A330neo and in a couple of years with the A350 it doesn't necessarily mean that it matters if the A380 as the flagship plane of Airbus makes them a profit or not.

ps.
Emirates will also decide this year if they place a new A350 order or go with the 787. Any decisions on the A380neo could also have an effect on that order. In other words, more is at stake for Emirates and Airbus then just the future of the A380.
I think from a business stand point ..... the A380 NEO is not worth the investment.

Sure Emirates will place 100 to 200 orders ....but realistically that is not enough for the 380 NEO to be worth building.

As for the 787 vs the A350 order ..... Emirates is already mad at Airbus for the A350 not living up to expectations.

They are so mad at Airbus that they want to buy 200 more A380s.

The A350 became too much plane for them as they had intended it for the regional routes where they are now again want to place an order. If they chose the A350 again it will be weird of course, nobody will understand why they cancelled their original order. But it's not unlikely that they will do, it's going to be a close competition that both manufactures will go all out for to get it.

Accumulated oil from the jet engines, especially if they're brand new or refurbished engines fired up for the first time. In the days of the Lockheed L1011, whenever the RB.211 engines started up you see a big puff of blue smoke.

I guess that the image you are refereeing to is on the first engine start-up for that particular A380, in that case then all the parts of the engine have coasting of oils and other residue from manufacturing that is burned off, hence the great puff of smoke.
