Airbus needs more time to decide on A380 changes - paper
Excerpt

PARIS, April 12 (Reuters) - Airbus will not abandon its A380 jumbo jet programme despite slow sales, its chief executive told Les Echos newspaper, and needs more time to decide whether to redesign its engines as major customer Emirates Airline has requested.

Emirates, the leading buyer of the existing A380 jet with 140 orders, has been pushing Airbus to revamp the plane with newer engines, a move that could lower the number of seats airlines must sell to break even.

Airbus boss Fabrice Bregier appeared to rebuff the request in the interview with Les Echos published online on Sunday.

"We are already working on ways to make the A380 more attractive economically by adding seats while preserving the amazing comfort of the plane," he said.

"Long-term, the question will be how to improve its performance by working on aerodynamics and motorisation. But we will not do that until a good business plan can be found. That is not the case now and we have no intention to spend indiscriminately."

The CEO added that the A380 programme would break even by the end of the year, and that Airbus hoped to maintain its financial performance.

Airbus has officially launched the 11 abreast on the main deck option for the A380 at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2015.

The option, which don't require large changes to the deck, the same rails will be used for the current 10 abreast seating, will be available from 2017.

I thought that Airbus always claimed that their planes are more spacious and there for more comfortable to fly then their competitors plane.

Airbus has not find a customer for the 11 Abreast option, Emirates will stick with 10 Abreast.

Do you know Airbus A380 is the first flight of a commercial airliner using a liquid fuel processed from gas, GTL (gas to liquids), under the company's alternative fuel research programme. One engine was fuelled with a blend of 40% GTL and standard jet fuel, the other three with standard fuel..

Is Airbus really serious with that window seat??

But then, it's not like people buying the ticket would know anything about it.

I really hope this isn't going to be a thing....
Airbus going down the 787 road in Economy. The 787 is overall a really nice plane, but the 3-3-3 configuration in Economy makes it really unpleasant to fly with. -> I don't give a shit about bigger windows or better designed overhead bins, if I don't have enough space for my arms...
It's really disappointing that even so-called "premium" airlines like Qatar Airways have chosen that horrible 3-3-3 configuration for their 787...

Yikes! A 3-5-3 seating arrangement on an A380 seems to be excessive already, much denser than a 3-4-3 seating layout already deployed with a lot of the widebodies out there. Yes, adding one more seat per row can provide additional revenue, but it means sacrificing even more space for an already packed aviation market. I hope Airbus would reconsider that next step and instead improve seating quality instead so that more passengers will enjoy better flights rather than cramming in more seats.

This cabin configuration isn't worse than a 3-4-3 configuration in a B777 or a 3-3-3 configuration in a B787.

I hope that won't happen, either. It will only mean more passenger complaints because of tighter space and less legroom in the long run. If I were to operate a 787, I would have the Y seats to be 2-4-2 instead of 3-3-3 so that there will be more legroom for flyers and allow couples to sit right next to each other without having to disrupt a third person in the process.

But it means with an already tight space, you are just barely squeezing in one more seat just to provide extra revenue for the airline. Yet it also means additional work for the cabin crew, from serving food to addressing the additional weight found in the aircraft itself. Yes, the A380 is a ginormous plane, but it does not mean airlines will accept the fact that 3-5-3 will be reality... that means the person sitting in the center of a 5-seater row would need to go through at least 2 people just to get to the aisle, which means more hassle than dealing with 1 person on a 3-4-3 layout.

If you sit by the window, then you are also forced to bother 2 people to get out of you seat, but the best thing to sit in the middle would be that you could alternate between which two you want to bother, compared to always bothering the same people.

Cattleclass. Thats the word for that. Maybe nice for low-costcarriers. In theorie for revenue. But in practice? I think people would ignore the carriers with this formation.
