Thai's fleet is an absolute mess and is ripe for rationalisation. They have too many types - great if you're a spotter but rubbish if you're trying to run a business.

Yeah, it seemed that Thai Airways have habit of making "trial & error" when it came about purchasing airplane. Anyone might remember when Thai Airways purchased Airbus A340-500 then used them for Bangkok-New York non-stop service. It was a flop.

And It's interesting that they still retain the P&W powered A330 in their fleet.

Now I don't know how is the future of their A380s......

No concrete plan on sale or lease of aircraft, says new MAS chief
Published: 4 May 2015 7:37 PM

Quote:
In a statement released today, Mueller said that one of the areas being looked at by the airline was exploring fleet options to enhance viability of long haul sector.

"MAS needs to operate and utilise its fleet at an optimum level besides maximising revenue on the route it flies.

"The market needs to give Malaysia Airlines room to explore various options in determining the most viable strategy,” Mueller said.

Mueller assumed leadership of the Malaysia Airlines Group on Friday, following a decision by its sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad to accelerate the leadership transition to enable Mueller to be in the executive capacity to lead the overall restructuring of MAS.

It was reported days ago that MAS had put its entire fleet of Airbus A380 and four Boeing 777-200 jets for sale.

Aviation site Leeham News had reported the national flag carrier is open to outright sale or lease.

In other words, if they find a new home for these A380s and 777 they will be gone, until then they will keep operating them.

If they weren't offered for sale or lease it would not have hit the news.

As for Thai, their A340s are already gone, the retirement of their 747s is being accelerated, the last one will now be gone in 2016 instead of 2018. They will also dispose of 6 A330s this year. If that isn't enough it's not unlikely that they will look at the A380 and if they still fit into their businessmodel.

I believe like MH, TG's operations are being affected by political motivations and ones selfishness and ego. However TG is getting better and is in the process of rationalising the fleet to common aircraft types, at least they have a plan for their future fleet and have already started receiving next generation airliners. MH needs better fleet management, I cannot believe that previous management didn't order replacement aircraft for their ageing 77E's, despite the unfortunate accidents, MH would have needed to replace them anyways.

The A380 I was on did not have a 2-deck access orientation, so it felt like a single deck plane, for all intents and purposes. I was expecting a section that had a lounge type set up with stair access for both decks. Do any brands have that configuration?

The only airlines that have a lounge on the A380 have an all economy main deck that has no access to this lounge area.

No airline has more stairs then the 2 at the absolute front and end of the cabins. Which in most flights are only used by the cabin crew.

Do any of you think there is any merit to the idea going around that the A380 is a plane ahead of its time?

I would say that the engineers who proposed the concept of Superjumbo airplane in 1990s didn't foresee the September 11 tragedy which would affecting the way the airline industry run today.
I think had the September 11 tragedy never took place, the market for Superjumbo like A380 would have been much bigger than what it is now. And Boeing would probably built its rival instead of developing Dreamliner or Next Gen Boeing 777.

No, its definitely not ahead of its time. I think its a bit old. The problem with this plane is that it was designed in the mid to late 90s / early 2000s.

The technology, information, and, materials used to build this plane I would considered old.

- new engines
- newly designed wings
- carbon fiber body

and i am sure there are other additions made on this list.

Those changes alone could save the 380 on fuel and make the 380 look WAYYYY better when selling to customers.

Right now, the 380 is fat bird that needs to go on a diet.

One of the biggest problems affecting the A380 are the huge capital works required by airports to accommodate it. This limits its usefulness to airlines compared to the 777, which is much more flexible in terms of where it can operate.

A SQ A380 (with reg 9V–SKI) is now painted in a special Singaporean Flag livery in commemoration of Singapore's 50th Anniversary. This was Singapore Airlines' first special livery since the Tropical from 1998 to 2000 when the SQ006 incident happened. Photo by Andre Giam
