Singapore Airlines Spokesman: Had 5 Cases Of Oil Leaks On Trent 900 Engines
3 March 2011

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Singapore Airlines Ltd. (C6L.SG) had five incidents of oil leaks in Rolls-Royce's Trent 900 engines that propel its fleet of Airbus A380, the world's biggest passenger jet, according to a company spokesman.

"We have had five cases of oil leaks on Trent 900 engines but there was no safety of flight issue on any of those occasions. The issue that caused the leaks was identified and corrected," Nicholas Ionides, the vice president for public affairs at Singapore Airlines said in an email in response to queries from Dow Jones Newswires. He didn't state when the incidents took place.

The incidents were minor and the pilots didn't need to reduce engine power in flight, Ionides said in response to queries on two incidents of oil pressure problems on similar engines, also manufactured by Rolls-Royce Group Plc (RR.LN), that were reported by Australian carrier Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU). Pilots of the Qantas A380s had to reduce power to the affected engines in two separate incidents last month.

Industry safety experts remain focused on incidents involving A380 aircraft partly because of the hazardous, high-profile disintegration of a Rolls-Royce engine on a Qantas A380 on Nov. 4, shortly after takeoff from Singapore. Debris from the engine damaged the fuselage and various aircraft systems, forcing pilots to confront a cascade of computerized fault messages and return to Singapore for an emergency landing.

The engine maker, Airbus and safety regulators came up with a fix and enhanced inspection requirements, though Qantas ended up grounding its entire A380 fleet for a longer period than other operators while Singapore Airlines recalled its jets for checks and had to delay some flights.

The European Aviation Safety Agency said in a statement on its website on Wednesday that airlines can stop "intrusive" inspections advised earlier by the regulator. The cause of the incident has been addressed adequately and it is now considered prudent to cancel the inspections, the EASA said.

Ionides said Singapore Airlines conducts regular checks on all its engines and "that won't change." However, he didn't offer a comment on the EASA notice.

Lufthansa recently unveiled details of its new Business Class cabin and seats aboard its new Airbus A380 Superjumbo, and like any new aircraft and cabin product launch plenty of details to share with you.

However before I get into the details of Lufthansa A380 Business Class cabin and seat need to point out one of the stand out features that is available in all classes (not just Business and First Class) and that is the world air humidification system which increases air humidity from the normal aircraft average of 5% humidity up to 25%. This is sure to be a great feature, which will ensure passengers feel better on-board and also arrive at their destination more refreshed than ever before.

Lufthansa A380 Business Class Seat

Located on the upper deck behind first class the new business class cabin features 98 business class seats configured in a 2-2-2 seating arrangement, each seat measures 67 cm (26.3 inch) wide and 145-152cm long (57-59.8 inch) long (Seat and Bed configuration). These numbers look great but there is one catch, the Lufthansa A380 Business Class Seat does not convert into a true lie-flat bed, in fact the maxim inclination is only 168° rather than the 180° you get on a lie flat bed.

In-flight Entertainment & Communication Options
All Lufthansa A380 Business Class Seats are equipped with the following entertainment options:
10.6 inch LCD Screen that has programming in 10 different languages, and includes
In-Seat USB Port for charging USB devices such as iPods
In-flight power compatible with all international
30 Current Feature Films
20 Video Channels
75 TV Series/Documentaries
30 Radio Channels
200 on-demand music CDs
10 multi-player Games
Niceview Moving Map/Airshow that includes flight information and video from the aircrafts 3 external cameras
Satellite Phone in each seat

Armed with only the above details one cannot get the full feel of how good Business Class on Lufthansa’s A380 is going to be, however going by the details we have the experience should be very good, especially with the new air humidification system.

So the current Lufthansa A380s still have the old business class?

Really love the air humidification system. That would be the single most important feature for me on long haul flights.

This is the old C-Class, LH has installed on all of its long-haul fleet. With the A380 a new First Class was introduced. LH will introduce a new C seat (100% lie-flat) with arrival of the B747-8I this year's end / next year (depending on Boeing )

China Southern Airlines' first A380 makes its maiden flight

PARIS, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The first Airbus A380 of China Southern Airlines, the biggest Chinese airline by fleet size, made its maiden flight on Friday.

The plane flew from France to Germany for cabin work and painting, the French producer Airbus said in a statement.

The first of five Airbus A380s ordered by China Southern Airlines flew to Hamburg, Germany from Toulouse, France, after completion of the final assembly and system tests in Toulouse, Airbus said.

The A380, coated in green against corrosion was powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines and will be painted in full China Southern livery, according to Airbus.

China Southern Airlines will become the seventh A380 operator. Earlier in the day, the Chinese airline firm announced plans to have its first A380 in the second half of 2011.

China's HNA says to buy aircraft from Boeing, Airbus

(Reuters) - HNA Group, China's fourth-largest airline group and parent of Hainan Airlines Co Ltd (600221.SS), said it will sign aircraft purchase orders on Tuesday with leading aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing Co (BA.N) and Airbus (EAD.PA).

HNA was planning to sign an aircraft purchase agreement and a memorandum of understanding with leading aircraft makers, also including Dassault Aviation SA (AVMD.PA) and Gulfstream Aerospace at the event, it said in a media invitation for the signing ceremony.

There has been speculation that the HNA orders could include Airbus' A380s as the Chinese government is calling for the purchase of more wide body planes to help ease air traffic congestion.

Airbus declined to comment.

Chinese airlines have been accelerating to expand their fleet to meet rising demand from increasingly affluent Chinese passengers.

Industry association IATA has forecast the number of international air passengers from mainland China will rise by an average of 10.8 percent per year through to 2014, making it the world's fastest-growing market.

Chinese President Hu Jintao agreed with the United States in January to buy 200 Boeing aircraft for delivery between 2011 and 2013, but it was unclear how many of these were new orders.

HNA Group has 11 airlines and also invests in airports, hotels and other businesses. (Additional reporting by Tim Hepher in Paris) (Editing by Jacqueline Wong)
