From autumn 2016 commuter services from Kildare west of Dublin will be able to use the line to run though to Connolly, Tara Street, Pearse and Grand Canal Dock stations in the city centre. ‘For the first time, commuters on the popular Kildare suburban rail line will have frequent services directly into the heart of the south city business district’, said Donohoe. ‘This will provide an attractive alternative for private motorists who currently commute into the city along the congested N7 corridor’

Irish Rail issues tender for national train control centre
Friday, March 04, 2016

IRISH Rail (IE) has issued a tender for the supply of a new National Train Control Centre (NTCC), which will replace the existing Centralised Traffic Control Centre (CTCC) located at Connolly Station in Dublin, which dates from the 1970s

IE says the NTCC is necessary due to capacity restraints with the existing facility, which oversees 1500km, or 75% of the network, and aging IT systems. The new centre will integrate signalling and communications control across the entire 2400km IE network and is intended to optimise rail traffic management and origin-to-destination performance, providing accurate real-time travel information and improved train performance

Irish railway funding crisis puts lines at risk, report warns

A number of rail lines may be forced to close as Irish railways is threatened with insolvency, a confidential report has warned.
The draft report given to Minister for Transport Shane Ross shows the country’s rail infrastructure has deteriorated to such a degree due to funding shortages that there are now increased safety risks. It states the rail network needs more than €600 million investment over the next five years.
The report, seen by The Irish Times, says in the absence of any additional Government funding, large chunks of the rail network will have to close to eliminate the funding gap, leaving only the Dart, Dublin and Cork commuter routes and inter-city services from Dublin to Cork, Belfast and Limerick.
The review was compiled by the National Transport Authority and Iarnród Éireann to examine possible solutions for the financial sustainability of the State-owned rail operator.
