Not exactly ultra-futuristic shots here (see first page for the real deal). Went on a little drive around my neighbourhood in Vancouver's West side. A good half of Vancouver proper is essentially a dense maze of hedge-walls and mini mansions mingling with upscale little condos. Pardon the quality of my phone pics, I took most of these out of a moving car. I grouped them into similar styles, but in reality these pics are scattered everywhere from Kitsilano to Kerrisdale to South Granville, from King Edward Ave to 70th ave.

Most of these pics are in the Arbutus area, which is rich-Asian central (51% of neighbourhood population). I didn't get as far as Shaughnessy, but that will be for next time...

Some newer additions to the neighbourhood:

The 21st century Vancouver Special, the new architectural plague coming to a burb near you.

Starting to get a little cookie-cutter:

The typical roundabout to calm the non-existent traffic in the neighbourhood

West Coast contemporary:

Shaughnessy replicas

The hidden density - laneway housing

A four-plex neatly hidden in what looks like a single family home:

The smallest and likely the only houses in the west side for less than $1.5M, maybe.

And likely the ugliest 1980's house in the west side:

I resized most of the pictures so that I can fit in more without taking too much real estate...

That neighbourhood looks really good as far as the lush green streetscapes and the (mostly) interesting architecture, but it would bu much better if it was denser, as in buildings not quite so far apart, not set back so far from the street, and maybe throw in a few lowrise apt/condo buildings (with equally appealing architecture of course).

Definitely a very interesting and enjoyable thread!

Here is Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver 15 km to the south, population 180,000

Richmond has 4 skytrain (elevated subway) stations, with an additional 3 at the airport.

Aberdeen Mall and the adjacent hotel

Figured I should be less selective in photos, to keep the thread alive.

Skytrain going through Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver (population 180,000)

Tram line to Granville Island from Olympic Village skytrain station

Sorry for the crap quality from the cell pics. I'm mostly showcasing the subject of this thread rather than my noobish photography skills.

Some pics of the street-interface/public realm in a typical example of Vancouver's trademark point tower and townhouse configuration. This massing form has been repeated in numerous cities like San Diego, Toronto, Dubai, etc, often out of context, resulting in a rubber-stamp effect where each copy becomes less and less refined than the previous one, to the point where many horrendously-done examples have made the term "point tower + townhouse" taboo, synonymous with repetitive, dead streetscapes. Of course, despite the trend towards high-density living, families will exist and there will always be a demand for the peace and quiet of residential-scaled neighbourhoods. Here is where it began and how it's done.

But back to what you were saying, a lot this podium + tower configuration leaves much to be desired. Toronto seems to be going the way of Vancouver with this concept.
