IXU gets some decent traffic mostly because of its proximity to the Ajanta and Ellora caves, which are still big tourist destinations and there is some industry as well, most notably textiles and sarees, and the Skoda Auto plant, which, if you happen to land on RWY 27, is visible on final approach from the "right" side of the aircraft. I think currently the airport has ATR 72-500s, 737s and 319s/320s from AI, IT, 9W and Kingfisher Red as well.

I flew from BOM to IXU and back in Dec. '07, so it was a few years ago but at the time, the old concrete shack (which you see towards the top right-hand corner of the photo showing the new terminal from the west side) was in use. At the time I saw this new structure was under construction but there was nothing going on, it had only been partially built. This is a nice surprise, AAI actually got it completed, I thought it had been left as a dump. The new ramp had been completed at the time though. The new terminal looks great too. I don't think I like the bluish skylights though.

The old terminal-not much to say about it, other than it was showing its age and was way too small for the amount of traffic handled-basically a concrete shack. This new terminal will be much welcomed by passengers.

The credit for timely completion of Aurangabad Airport project should be given to JIBC (The Japan Bank for International Cooperation), which provided major part of the funding for the project & also ensured timely completion of the project. It is they who ensured that the airport matches international standards and Aurangabad is able to welcome both domestic as well as international tourists & is able to offer them world class facilities even in a small town.

Well that figures. This shows the AAI is still overly incompetent like it always was, although it has improved somewhat these days, compared to what it was.

I know that this is a bit old data, when Aurangabad was connected by air only to Mumbai. However, recently more flights to Mumbai have been added & new flights to places like Delhi, Udaipur & Hyderabad have been started.

I like the local touch, wish more airports in India incorporate the local themes. Pillars with rock carvings is very authentic. I hope the entire ceiling is done with some faux plaster of paris adorned with local paintings/carvings scene. Gives work to the local artisans. Those bare assed steel roofs and the signature AAI pillar props everywhere make things bland and boring.
