I have a question about sao paulo: I always heard sao paulo isn't a particularly safe place to walk around. by looking at the pics I get a different impression. is it just this area? I'm going to be in sao paulo for 2 days soon. I have no clue where to go and what to see. is the area around avenida paulista an area suitable for a little walk? is there a shopping area in the downtown comparable to the calle florida in buenos aires for example?

Like most cities in the world São Paulo has safe and not safe places. You just have to stick with the touristical areas and crowded places and you will be fine.

I think other guys can give you good advice about visiting São Paulo. I prefer taking myself people to walk around, since it seens difficult to me giving advices to someone I don´t know the real interests. Maybe if you tell us about what kind of think you´re interested in visiting I can give some help.

Anyway I leave here two interesting articles about São Paulo, from the New York Times:

Crazy Nights in São Paulo (2009)

The New São Paulo (2006 - a bit old but comprehensive article)

Although Sao Paulo may not have the knock-em dead skyline like Hong Kong or NYC, on a street level it is as impressive as any city I've seen on here.

Man, I've walked by the Paulista Avenue alone several times (when I was 16, 17...). It's very safe!

Well, about the second question. I don't know much about 'calle Florida', but I can say that there are a lot of shopping streets in São Paulo, especially in the south zone, and around Paulista Avenue. In downtown there's te famous '25 de Março Street", which is a very popular shopping (and crowded) street. But I can assure downtown is very interesting!
