it'd be cooler if they can have every station roof be covered in solar panels. taiwan is supposed to be one of the biggest producer of solar panels. why not take advantage of it? taiwanese should push utilization of solar power more like germany especially since taiwan is so energy resource poor. i thought after construction of kaohsiung world games stadium it would start a trend there.

They could always install them at a later date. Although they'll need a separate budget for that.

nyc subway system may not be the cleanest and modern but it is big and extensive and functional and 24 HOURS. which makes it one of the world's best subway systems. fact.

okay. Maybe whether a subway system is good or bad is simply a personal preference issue. And I happen not to appreciate the 24hr benefits considering the dirtiness and smells I have to endure during day time :p

And it doesn't even run that frequently during nighttimes. Plus the never-ending constructions and unreliable weekend schedule, NYC really loses a lot to Taipei MRT.

part of what makes a subway system one of the worlds best is size and hours of operation. nyc subway is the biggest or second biggest in the world - depends on what ranking you look at. many people stay out late past 12am like i did and need to rely on subway. so taipei loses out to nyc in those aspects. they are constantly working on the nyc system which is why there's always construction. they are currently adding another major line - the 3rd ave line in eastern part of manhattan. im sure those stations will be much nicer.

unfortunately those stations won't be much nicer. i was there when they opened the new station on the southern tip of manhattan leading to the Staton Island Ferry and it was pretty dated from the get go (white bathroom tiles, corrugated metal stairwells). They also completely tore down and rebuilt the 96th and broadway stop on the UWS, and it was still pretty bad because basic concepts like air conditioning and platform screen doors are missing, which led to poor circulation, sweltering heat (rotting trash), trash on the tracks, and three bar turn styles. Due to lack of platform screen doors, the track area was not enclosed, so brake dust immediately engulfed the interior and made it as dusty as all the other stations in Manhattan.

There are no signs that the 3rd avenue line will be held to a higher standard, as much of the infrastructure will be based on concepts from the existing system in place. The MTA is pretty bad at adopting any technology that can potentially raise the quality of the system.

i guess another point to bring up is that currently the MTA has a route length of 330 km, which is 3x larger than Taipei's (110 km). At the current rate of expansion, the MRT will have a comparable route length within 10 years (MRT is essentially doubling in size within the next 4 years). Track lengths, however are a different matter, as the MTA has far more tracks running in parallel along the same route, while the MRT has largely independent lines.

Kali, you are so biased.. When it comes to Taiwan, its all about design and stuff.. But now when we talk about NYC, you said its the best because its extensive. you forgot to mention its also the ugliest in the world. FACT

nyc subway system is old. to completely renovate all the stations would bankrupt nyc and state as there's just too many stations. theres no way they would install air conditioning and platform doors at every station as it would be too costly to maintain as the subway system is too huge. and theres no way taipei mrt will catch up to nyc`s in size and no logical reason to. nyc popluation is 8+million and nyc metro is 25+million which is bigger than the entire population of taiwan.

taipei mrt is superior in design an cleanliness than nyc.
nyc mta is superior in. size and hours of operation than taipei. happy, awesome??

I am simply confused if there's a third ave line? Or do you actually mean second avenue line?

Unfortunately I also feel that NYC subway is very outdated and mismanaged...

Cosmetic renovation is one thing, but when you have constant delays during rush hours, rerouting without notice, and random train stoppages inside the tunnel, it really decreased the efficiency. Sadly people are so used to it so nobody is willing to do anything about it.

I respect NYC subway for what it is because many people depend on it everyday. But to be honest, its not the best in the world anymore and every new yorker should acknowledge that. Without self-reflection and improvement there will be no progress.

Ok I shouldn't complain about nyc subway here anymore since its a taiwan forum :P
