Does the density of Chicago spread inland from the lake like Toronto or does it stay close to the shoreline?

The highest density areas stretch all along the lakefront from north to south. It does penetrate inland, but only about a .5-1 mile generally I'd say...after a mile medium density (2-3 flats, 3 story apartment buildings, etc) dominates the cityscape.

The low rise neighborhoods on west-side Manhattan (in the first pic) must be some of the best places to live in the whole world. Imagine walking out to your roof at night and seeing all those skyscrapers in your backyard.
