the steel on this thing is rising really fast! they could beat their intended time frame of ending construction in 2017,at this rate we could see the building topping out by the beginning of next year!

Remember the steel is limited by the core speed when the steel catches up to it.

CBS News did a nice video on skyscrapers around the world - mainly focusing on our very own Wilshire Grand:

Click through for video:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/wilshire...st-skyscraper/

Quote:
Why fewer skyscrapers are being built in the U.S.

North America used to be the boss when it came to constructing super-tall buildings, but now it's lost that bragging right. However, the quest to impress in a financially wise way is still inspiring big city skylines, like in Los Angeles, CBS News' David Begnaud reports.

From the air, Los Angeles' newest skyscraper looks juvenile compared its peers. But when completed, the Wilshire Grand will be 2.1 million square feet, soar 1,100 feet from ground to the top of the spire and be 73 stories tall with a sky deck that has a panoramic view.

"This is not a trendy building. It's not a fashion statement that's gone in a few years," said Chris Martin, chief architect and development manager. "It's something that has to last for a very long time."

"We call it a next-generation office," said Martin. "It's also a next-generation hotel, but we're trying to design buildings that work for the tenant of today, not the tenant of yesterday.".............

You can see the core from some angles.

Amazing is the speed at which the tower is growing, the exoskeloton is about 100 feet tall and the concrete core looks about 230 feet tall, the building is about nearly 30 percent of its total height

The core rises not that fast as the steel, and when the core is topped out the steel needs to rise some 300 feet more.

The last few sets of pics are just spectacular. Just like the WTC in NY, this is virtually a fortress. Over there because of security, here because of mother nature.

I'm always surprised at how (seemingly) early escalators tend to get installed.

Yes, I was able to see it from the 10E over a month ago! Of course I really had to look for it then, and that is not safe to do while driving, so I had a limited look. I am pretty sure by now, that you can see it without even trying!

I drive to Pomona, San Dimas at least once a week. Next time I head that way, Ill check into taking a pic. Its very hard from the 10 because of all the trees and other shit blocking the view, so I may need someone in the car with me to train the camera at the proper direction and angle, and just start taking dozens of pics. I am sure at least one of them will be clear enough to post!

Looks way generous as far as floor count goes. Unless that is starting from the bottom of the pit and is just for construction purposes. Nope, I see from an older pic they also skipped 14. For what's supposed to be an awesome real mccoy "to last a very long time" "not a trendy building..not a fashion statement" as the developer proudly stated no b.s. building they sure are falling for some cheap and cliche gimmicks.

^ No need for that comment. I don't see the connection between numbering floors and building a modern, long-lasting tower.
